Call me cynical, paranoid or whatever but I had this ROM installed for 5 minutes before I ripped it off my phone. It was very slick, but the hacked together feel and brokeness of it creeped me out.

Do we know that this ROM isn't some cover for a mass phishing attack? If you think about it, how ingenious is it to wrap your spyware in some pretty eye candy?

Has anyone got under the hood of this thing and looked at whats truly going on or we all blinded by the "newness" of it?

I have been wondering the same thing to be honest. It's probably not but I am waiting to try this one until a bit more is known about it. The fact that many of the bugs are related to personal information has me a bit paranoid. Dialer, accounts, location, etc. Since I use my phone primarily for work I would rather be safe than sorry.

If you are going by your thoughts, why would you load any rom? Issues with the language is because it is in it's native language. Also this wasn't meant for the droid, so of course there is going to be issues.

Why stop with the rom, what about all the apps that are on the marketplace? I have no problem loading this and using it, in fact I'm having a blast with it!!

The laws that govern this are actually more enforced and taken more seriously over seas. Believe it or not, you have a better shot of catching something something here in US.

OP, are you to be trusted? Ha ha... I'm joking... or am I? Or was I? Or when I? Or what I?

Confused?

Drink this.

Better?

Good.

Chinese Anonymous Developers = Paranoia...

American Developers With Forum Handle = ???

I'm not saying everyone is skeptical because of the ethnicities of the developers. No... I'm not saying that at all.
I'm not saying.
I'm not saying.

Sorry... I just wanted to type "I'm not saying" four times in a column...

This is open source software. If you have doubts check the source. MIUI is like the cyanogenmod of china.

I hate to admit it but I think you hit the nail on the head. When cyanogen or pete release a ROM I don't think twice about it. For the community by the community. That's the spirit of open source...right...right?

When anonymous Chinese developers release a ROM that seems so groundbreaking yet so broken I raise my eyebrows. When I see a big green up arrow icon with Chinese on it, my ignorant self thinks that's the "upload everything you know about me" button.

And maybe that's my own problem that I have to get past.

But you have to admit... nobody thought twice about that big wooden horse sitting in the middle of Troy. I'm sure it was real pretty to look at.

I, for one, appreciated all the new FB friend invites from random asian girls I got after installing this... seemed like a win to me!

I trusted it just because of the number of developers that are going over the code would have found something by now.

It's kind of refreshing that you admit that your fear is not based on any logic or facts and is your own xenophobia. That very rarely happens. And good on you however much that's worth from some random person on the internet.

I thought the ROM worked well on the Nexus One/Desire? And that all the problems came from trying to port it over to other phones.

I too thought briefly about the legitimacy and/or security with this ROM, but knowing that I am constantly flashing dozens of different ROMs by developers that I know equally as much about as the MIUI devs, I dont feel that this ROM has any more potential of being malware than any other... What happens if Cyan,Pete,UD,etc get a hair across their ass about something and decides to throw malicious code in a ROM and disappear off the face of the earth? This should be a known risk you take when loading any code by any developer, and the devs always say flash at your own risk.....

I have to say that i was thinking along these lines when i first read about it. But I also researched Miui and he is indeed the Asian Cynanogen of China. This rom is ground breaking and exciting.

So, some Chinese guy named Miui can now hack my phone and determine that I'm sitting here in my recliner in the den?? I don't care. Maybe he can drop by and we'll have a beer or two.

All kidding aside, I keep nothing on my phone that is sensitive - no banking, no investments portfolio, no embarrassing porn, no embarrassing texts from girl friends, etc. Let the hackers hack away. I don't care! Cell phones are probably the least secure thing we deal with on a daily basis. Treat it like it's a billboard - Don't put anything really private on it.

I didn't see anyone mention that this is what the MIUI team classifies as a VERY BETA rom for the Hero/Nexus one, add the issues of porting to other phones and the fact it is native to another country and of course there are going to be issues/bugs.
