"Verizon Wireless" showing up

Today I noticed the words "Verizon Wireless" showing up on the bar above the time when the screen is locked, in the upper right corner before I unlock my screen, and in the top bar when the phone is dialing. Is that new or has it always been there? Was there some mini upgrade?

I noticed it when I first got the phone and I updated the firmware from 2.1 to 2.2.

Its just the carrier brand...there's actually an app that allows u to change it to whatever u like within a 16 character limit. Its called "CCName" Idk if its on the market or not n I don't recall where I DL'd it from but if u Google the name, u should find it quickly...
