3rd Broken Headphone Jack

Not looking for troubleshooting help, this is just a report.

Love my Droid Razr Maxx (Verizon) but for one serious issue. The headphone jack has stopped working or broken on 3 consecutive Razr Maxx handsets.

1st one - Cut over stops working so if you plug in any headphones, adapter or ear buds the sound doesn't cut over and continues to play from the external speaker.

2nd one - Same issue along with the headphone plug no longer physically staying in the jack. Won't click down, just pops out.

3rd one - Actually heard this one go out. Got in my car after work, turned on Pandora and plugged in my headphone to tape adapter for in car play and only the left channel was working. Pulled plug out and replugged and now it's the same issue... sound continues to play from external speakers and won't cut over. Only had this one 2 weeks and used the headphone jack less than 10 times.

I know the support minded will want a go at this so let me answer your questions before you ask.

Yes I've restarted all three phones multiple times.
No my phones aren't rooted.
Yes I've tried lots of different headphones, ear buds and adapters
Yes I've tried several different software apps including pandora, tune in radio, winamp, etc.
No I'm not using some huge or weird headphone plug
No there isn't any fuzz, dirt, lint or other stuff in the headphone jack
No I'm not sticking a paperclip in the jack

Verizon support center has been very quick to send me replacement phones but they are refurbished so you see flaws like molding clicking, side buttons either sticking out too far or not enough but they've all worked except for the insanely short life on the headphone jack.

Verizon support stated that if this was a common or known issue I'd have the option of a different model but this is apparently not a known issue. Hard for me to believe as it's insane odds that three phones in a row have had the same issue.

Just throwing this out there in case someone else is seeing the issue and wants to know they are not alone. Waiting on my 4th Razr Maxx right now and should have it tomorrow. Let's see if the headphone jack will last more than a month. Not holding my breath... wish my phone worked.

Locker, you have definitely done your research on this problem because you are very aware of all the troubleshooting solutions. This has definitely been a reported problem in the past and almost always has been due to lint deep inside the jack. You deserve to have your $500-600 phone work the way it should and getting refurbs is a pia. Here's hoping you have good luck with your next one. If not, I would try to show the verizon rep all the threads and posts reporting the problem and see if that will help. I have always used a headphone on all my phones on a daily basis (drive standard and I definitely need both my hands for driving) and have never had my headphone jack fail on me on any phone. Imo, it shouldn't happen.

I know I am new here, but I was just wondering if you have used a shot of air to try and clear out the jack? I'm not talking about an aircompressor being shoved into the headphone jack, but perhaps a spray from a keyboard dust remover etc? Just wondering, in case I ever run into this issue.

SallyC had a perfect solution to the "lint in headphone jack" problem that worked very well. I believe it was that her husband used a very fine drill bit and very gently and carefully twirled the lint out. You have to be careful with air because it could blow the lint in deeper.

Another option to throw out there would be to use an Ottorbox Commuter case. It has a rubber cover protecting the headset jack and charging port, I know this is a work around that you might not like.

However it will keep your phone safer and the commuter does not add too much bulk. Just a thought to protect your $500 investment.

This is why I like otterbox defenders.. they cover the jack and help to prevent lint and other foreign objects from getting in the jack..

Exactly! I haven't had this particular issue and I use headphones a lot, but I get so frustrated when people suggest using after market products or apps to get my phone to do something it is supposed to do already.

Im having this issue as well... Was particularly bad yesterday I was on my motorcycle, and since I have problems with the wind pressure in my right ear I have to wear either an ear plug or an earbud with music. I opted for the music as I can still hear cars, trucks, my motorcycle and so on. I don't turn it up very loud.

The wind buffetting cause my sound to go in and out, or from left ot right. If i shake the jack back and forth it works fine.

Same as OP, no dirt, lint or anything in my phones. The head phone jack has just gradually gotten weaker and now it has to be in the perfect spot to work and any wind from an ant fart will disrupt it

Have you checked inside the jack for debris?? Lint or dirt or anything like that??

If you have and its clear, LOOK REALLY GOOD.. then get some isopropyl alcohol, 90%+ the higher the better, apply a little to the end if your headphone jack, and plug it in and out several times. This should aid in removing the oxidation.

Use just a little. And be sure you don't have debris blocking your plug first
