The Moto G may be the best value for a midrange phone. You can pick up a Moto G with an unlockable bootloader directly from Motorola for only $179. That includes a quad core processor, 4.5" HD screen, all day battery and more! If you spring for the GSM edition you will be able to unlock the bootloader and flash a custom recovery. It should be noted that currently the $99 Verizon variant is not unlockable.
This device has just become even more valuable. Dhacker29 has released his build of Cyanogen Mod 11 Kit Kat 4.4.2 to the Moto G. So far everything that Dhacker has tested is working just fine. You can expect Calls, Data, Camera, Media to all be working and this should be stable enough to use as a daily driver. This will work on both 4.3 and 4.4 bootloaders.
