gmail's checking of POP3 accounts automatically leaves messages on the server by default (i'm not sure that you can change this). if you have the option to use your non-gmail account as an imap account in outlook, doing so will sync the information between whatever client you use and the server. however, when you make changes to items on the server, gmail's copy is NOT updated (because of POP3).

since going DROID, i have all but forgotten my other non-gmail accounts. gmail handles everything sufficiently enough that if I ever have a need to use one of my old accounts, i can.

even though i've had my hotmail accounts for twice as long as my gmail accounts, i have no problems switching people to the correct account. and if they don't get it (as in make the switch), i can still reply through the old account.

I have been using the setup you outline for several weeks, with one exception. I also have Roadrunner (oh.rr), and it will not allow me to set "send mail as" to send through my RR account.

Whenever I try to set it up that way, I get error messages, generally about the server not supporting TLS. (I don't recall the exact wording.)

I did a lot of forum and google surfing about this problem, and I thought it was irresovable with Roadrunner. I have tried all the port and security settings possible, but none work to allow me to send through the RR smtp server. I have had to leave it set to "send as gmail."

Am I missing something?

i think somebody else mentioned that gmail doesn't support TLS, which is unfortunate. i'm not sure of another way around your problem.

Yeah I know how to do that, thanks. What I'm trying to understand is how/why things work differently in different situations. Right now, without that turned on messages come to my phone and then later come to outlook and are then removed from the server. When I briefly had a blackberry they said i needed to check that option in order to get messages to come into outlook which meant that messages remained on the server and had to be manually deleted.

If I have my vzw mail pulled into Gmail by POP3 will the messages remain on the server without checking that outlook option to leave messages on the server?

If I switch my vzw mail to imap what set up can I use to have things work the way that works for me without having to manually delete messages off the server.

I have similar needs as you, and I've found the easy solution was to set my e-mail account to autoforward to my gmail account. This let's me use my e-mail as usual - download to outlook or whatever and have it delete them from the server - but I get them on my Droid through gmail. I set my gmail account to reply with my regular email address, so when I reply from the Droid, they look like they come from my regular account. It works great.

Hi this is a very good tip. I did try this some time ago and it did not quite work out the way I wanted it to. My wife and I share a MSN account. I imported MSN mail into Gmail (I have my own gmail account). The problem that I had was that when my wife read and deleted emails that were for her (throught the MSN web interface) they would not delete from my gmail inbox. Also when I read and deleted email from MSN through my gmail inbox they would not show as read and deleted in the MSN web interface. I am really looking for a way to do that. Do you know of any way to do this.

What is 'recent mode?'
If you're accessing Gmail on multiple clients through POP, Gmail's 'recent mode' makes sure that all messages are made available to each client, rather than only to the first client to access new mail.
Recent mode fetches the last 30 days of mail, regardless of whether it's been sent to another POP client already.

Setting up 'recent mode'
In your POP client settings, replace '[email protected]' in the 'Username' or 'Email' field with 'recent:[email protected]'
Once you enable recent mode, please be sure to configure your POP client to leave messages on the server according to the instructions below:

• Outlook or Outlook Express: on the Advanced tab, check the box next to 'Leave a copy of messages on the server.'
• Apple Mail: on the Advanced tab, remove the check next to 'Remove copy from server after retrieving a message.'
• Thunderbird: on the Server Settings tab, check the box next to 'Leave messages on server.'

I may be premature here, but I think I have my Hotmail account forwarding to the Droid in a "timely" manner.

If anyone is still unsure, Hotmail does do POP3, regardless of the type of account you have. This is from Hotmail: POP3 Availability in Windows Live Hotmail - Mail and Settings - Windows Live Help

I followed the instructions above, but ended up using port 25 for the smtp.live.com Server. That prompted Gmail to send a code to HM that I entered into the Gmail window. I was then able to make the Hotmail account my default account. The last 2 messages I sent to my HM account came through to the Droid in around 3 minutes. There's probably more fine tuning to do but this is a major victory for me since the HM account is my main account.

I have gone back to my Blackberry and Verizon has the droid back. I gave up after having my Hotmail account hacked. I just don't need my mailing list to get 2 separate mailings on how to get Viagra. That includes the CEO of the company I work for. It may have a nice internet screen, but it can't hold a candle to a BB if your email is more important to you.

Thanks. The droid would have been more enjoyable. The BB is a business tool / hockey puck that I hate until another system comes along that will forward my emails within less than a minute of being received in my Hotmail account.

btw.... for you travelers out there. If you go out of the country with your droid and take it with you shut down your EMAIL polling. If you don't and you have it set to poll your emails every 15 minutes you are going to be surprised, BIG time. A coworker left his on and got a $290 data feed bill for less than 24 hours in Santo Domingo.

I didn't get the bill because I had already gone back to my BB. Another benefit of the BB operating system regarding emails.

I have tried to do this, but when I hit Add Account, it tells me Server returned error: "Connection refused" . I have tried repeatedly, starting fresh each time, but still get this. What am I overlooking?

I hate technology. I got it to go through, says it is working. But, though I have set my url domain as default, it shows sent by gmail for domain. That ain't gonna work for me. Plus, gmail isn't picking up mail to my domain, even though it will send. I guess I need to stick with the post office. Just shoot me now.

Hi-thanks for all your work here. I followed all the instructions yesterday and all my @verizon.net mail was dumping into my gmail app on droid, and I was ecstatic. Today I can't get any incoming, unless it is addressed to my gmail acct. Went back and read the google pages, and it seems it can take 48 hours for the POP to start. Yet I rec'd a couple dozen a day ago... I guess I should wait another day or two before I scream, but I want instant gratification. That, and I have to go out of town next week, and must be able to receive my work related email. On my droid. Any thoughts from way up there?

Well I've never done it but you can configure the non gmail app to receive your work email. It looks pretty straight forward on how to get it going. There is also the K9 mail app in the market. That is highly recommended by many people.

640k, Thanks for your hard work on this topic. I was beginning to get frustrated with the email and my droid.
Couple questions for you,
If I want to send an email from one of my pop accounts so that the client has that address and not my gmail address I need to use the normal email app and not the gmail app, correct?

If i change the settings on the pop accounts to check for new mail to never than would that eliminate the same emails showing up in the gmail and regular email, correct?
