Need help rooting

I've looked around and there are a ton of threads on the internet some old some new all confusing to me.

Basically can someone please guide me to the path of rooting my droid 4, I'm so confused by all the stuff I've found.

There are a few different methods but I have always used jsnweitzel's droid 4 utility. Look for his ICS Only Droid 4 Utility in the hacks section. Makes rooting a piece of cake.

Thanks I will look for that but I've also seen a lot of posts about safestrap is that something I need before I start?

You don't need safestrap to root. Safestrap is a custom recovery used to flash ROMs.
