I recently read that the same wifi assistant that's used in Project Fi (open wifi that passes Google's security) is coming in a future update to all Nexus phones (at least from Nexus 5 up). Just wondering if there's any discussion on this, or is it even valid.

If it comes to pass, I could remain with Verizon, and reduce my overall bill due to the reduced data usage when I'm not home. Always on wifi or my laptop, using Charter Spectrum when at home.

I've seen that reported by several sources that I trust as well, but haven't seen any concrete date on when it should be available. I'd say it's true though.

Bodes well for the future.

I'm still a bit skeptical about using unsecured networks, but from what I've read, it creates a VPN for you, so you SHOULD be safe. In theory...

We go nowhere near our data limit at this point in time, so I'm not concerned, but will be interested as the kids get older and things change.

Having come from using Project Fi's open WiFi it does create a VPN which is awesome. I saw there are updates being pushed out. I haven't seen it yet though.
