I think it is safe to say that most folks do not expect updates on a phone that we are more than 3 years removed from. The Galaxy S5 is a rapidly aging device. As one of the last Samsung flagship devices with a user replaceable battery it is very likely that there are still many people using this phone as a daily driver. With the all of the bugs constantly exposed in Android with monthly security updates it almost leaves those phones not receiving the security update as sitting ducks. Samsung has recognized this and has just provided a security patch for the S5 in Europe. While the device won't be receiving any major Android updates it is refreshing to see Samsung continue to release security updates for this device.

This is a minor update that does not bring many new features but it will at least address the many vulnerabilities that Google has discovered in Android OS and others that Samsung has detected in its software.

That's what security patches are typically for.
