Adding contacts to groups

The phone does not give me the option of adding a contact through beginning the typing of the name. Scrolling through my 5000+ contacts is not a usable way for me to add contacts but the typing options that worked fine on my older Droid does not appear on the Moto under adding contacts to group.

Welcome to the forum. Which phone do you currently have?

Droid Moto? Do you mean the original Droid from 2009? Or one of the new Moto Z Droid series? There is a Moto Z Droid, Moto Z Droid Play and Moto Z Droid Force.

To the best of my knowledge newer phones and the newer versions of Android do not support Contact Groups. There may be different Contacts apps on the Play Store that do, but I've never searched for one.

You should see a magnifying glass symbol on the Contacts screen which is the search option. Then as you start typing the name the list filters down.

"Should" is right. However, under Edit Contacts, there is no magnifying glass; only a scroll tool and boxes to check. With a large number of contacts, that's tricky, but maybe I just need to learn how to use it and forget about the old way.

Sorry, i didn't mean a search box when editing. When you first open the Contacts app there is a search symbol at the top of the screen to help locate a contact

Yes, I use that. On my old Droid, I could add contacts to a group through the same method in contacts: "Edit" then start typing and tap it in. There is no typing option at that point in this phone. It's scroll and check, except, with 5000 names whizzing by, that is a touchy operation. However, it may be just a skill thing. After all, Google/Motorola must know best!

Google sometimes think they know best, but we don't always agree. [emoji15]. Since Moto phones run stock Android now, what you are seeing is the pure Google experience.

I am using a Moto Z Droid(pur date Feb.20,2017) and I am able to add contacts to a group by tapping contacts, tap All, select a existing contact or add a contact then tap Edit, scroll down to More fields, tap More fields and scroll down to Group name, tap the group you want then tap Save at the top of the screen, and tap Save again. That usually does it for me. BTW, you can select as many groups as you want for each contact.
