After exiting any app the home screen does not turn black and is killing my battery?

anytime i am done using my phone it stays on unless i black it out by hitting the power button. shouldn't it do this automatically? If i get a text in the middle of the night it stays lit up killing my battery, how do i stop this? thank you.

Go to settings - display and check your "sleep"or "screen timeout" option. Maybe you have it set on never?
