And app called books?

This is SO ANNOYING!!!! I use a NOOK and the mobil app. I hate that I have someone deciding for me how to use my space on my phone. Isn't this technically property? I want to put up a No Trespassing sign - enter by permission ONLY!! :icon_evil:

I understand your frustration, however if the phone came with the app (I have a rooted OG Droid so I don't have it), you can not remove it unless you root.

So unless the phone came with it, it was installed at some time, and you should be able to remove it.

1 - The Tread is titled "And App Named Books?" - I addressed my issue with this App only and felt I could fuss about it being arbitrarily installed since was the topic. it isn't a thread titled Bloatware so I didn't address Bloatware and did not feel it appropriate on this topic.
2 - The App Books is a Google System App - I didn't download it, it didn't come with the phone and I didn't accept the app - it came with the newest update a week ago. I have tried to find ways to keep it from updating and have found no way. It even downloads 3 books to my SD I didn't order and don't want. I delete them, they come back.
3 - I rooted my original Droid but have not felt the need to do this (until now). However, I had to have my original TB replaced and am waiting to decide this one is working right before going that route.
4 - I didn't post my comment to cause a diatribe, I posted to commiserate with other folks that discovered this app and trying to figure out how to control it.
5 - And it was my opinion that Bob's comments were condescending and that annoyed me since I was simply stating my frustration with yet another app force fed to us. If I misunderstood I apologize.

My response that got the writer upset, I was responding to her about the NOOK app which I quoted in my post, Nowhere in what I quoted from the original writer does it even mention any other book app. I agree the starting post was about the Google Books app; however, I had been responding to the posts about where is the data stored.

I apologize for any misunderstandings.

It's all good, just seemed like this thread was starting to go the wrong way. Thanks for the apologies.

If you want to keep it from showing up I believe the only way to do so will be to root and wipe the app completely. If you have a paid version of Titanium Backup you can freeze it instead.

You could also root and change the file extension from .apk to .bak using a file manager. I highly recommend you do not delete the files, as you may have problems with future system updates.

But I agree with Mission, Titanium Backup Pro is the way to go and worth every penny. There are several other threads on these boards on how to root and freeze bloatware.

Mission and Jona - THANKS!!! this is what I was hoping to get. I don't want to root yet. My replacement phone has more issues than my original and am trying to decide if I want to go for another replacement - may be worse than this one. I will try the Titanium - AGAIN - thanks for the help.

Google system apps (maps, gmail, etc.) update automatically. It is my understanding that this can not be changed.

Who else but Google could have designed the UI that allows a user to uncheck the "auto update" checkbox, but still go ahead with the auto update regardless of the setting.
Even Microsoft wouldn't do that.

I believe Titanium requires the phone to be rooted :(

LOL, Yup, bought it, downloaded - quick review and I deleted. Figured out the must be rooted problem. So since now I am having other issues will just go ahead and ask for a replacement phone and get this over with. Thanks anyway.

I found it less expensive to use the free version of Titanium for all its free functionality and purchase "AndRootFile" for freezing apps.

If cost is an issue, just renaming the undesired app extension from .apk to .bak using a file manager is totally free. It's kind of a pain to manage, though, and I found Titanium Backup Pro to be worth the 6 bucks.
