Another reason to like the Droid - Apple bans sexy apps

How do you feel about network tv? They ban sexual content (well, to a certain degree). You bought the tv - they control what you see (unless you pay for specific adult channels). Is this any different? Curious. I don't view porn on my computer or my tv, but if I wanted to I can't imagine trying to view it on a tiny 3" screen instead of a large tv or monitor. Okay - a tangent..

I personally feel that there should be some kind of control - if nothing more than the rating system for movies. Then lock it out yourself with tools, as you mention. Are we as a moral race down to where any and all should be easily visible now, with only ourselves to police content? I don't know - certainly a big issue that requires a lot of thought across many issues.

Mike,

I buy the TV and I can buy a Blue Ray player and play anything I want... the TV maker doesn't limit that.. Apple does....
Just the FCC and goverment limiting TV...

But I'm with you they need to just rate it and then parents can control it... Its not that I want sex apps on my phone but I don't want to be told what I can not have...

Regards,
Mike

Perhaps Apple wants to keep a clean image.

You're right, your Droid, your content. Just like my house, my rules. We all have the right (for now) under the Constitution to live our lives as we see fit, without undue interference, or restriction by the government. In other words, what I do with my stuff, behind my closed doors is my business, so long as it's not breaking the law.

But, if Apple wants to ban, or restrict "sexy" apps on their app store, then, since it is their app store, owned and operated by them, then they have the right to restrict what they want.

One of the problems I have with this action is at Apple blocked some apps for content, but not others. Playboy is an acceptable app? Do people read it for the volleyball scores?

That should be the most controversial point in this article. Apple is telling me if i an not a multi-million dollar company then my app is smut and not allowed. As long as the SI app and Playboy app contain these images Apple is just a pathetic hypocrite. They need to let their customers have the freedom to get the apps they want. Parents who complain to Apple need to step up and be parents themselves. Don't be mad that Apple isn't policing your kids. That's my $.02

They took down content like "Wobble" because one of the marketing tools they use is that you can make women's "boobies" wobble. But, it is not a sexual app. Because it was marketed as a tool that could be used in a "sexual" way, it was banned.

Yea, i read about that as well. Know what it tempted me to do? Search for it on the market. It is truly an entertaining app. I don't see how that could be misconstrued as too "sexual". I really do not understand this hyper-sensitivity that our nation suffers from... I really don't.

I guess I don't see what the big deal is. It's their "store" so they can sell (or offer) what they want.

(Of course, I never understood what the big deal is anyway.)

I can rub an iphone on my privates and use it in a sexual way, so i think the iphone itself should be banned.

I read that the reason they did thsi was because women were complaining... isay women should stay at home, cleaning, cooking me food, and making babies, and not worry about things like smart phones! :D:D:D i kiiiiiid

All of these reasons in this thread are why i have never, nor will ever own an apple product.

You missed my wording - "network tv", I wasn't referring to the tv manufacturer. I also spoke of Apple as the software provider - not Apple as a hardware manufacturer.

Yep - neither of us want them to control our content (be it sexual or otherwise). A rating system for our guidelines, and the tools to manipulate it ourselves, yes. But the choice definitely should be ours.

We see eye to eye - you and I! :) mike

On the question of Apple - yes, they make the device - but they also provide the OS, and it's through this that they control the content (not as a hardware manufacturer). A lot different than HP, Dell, Motorola, etc who only make the hardware. Big distinction. mike

With my TV I can go to any content provider I want. I can buy DVDs, I can subscribe to cable/satellite/airwaves, whatever. With the iphone, you are restricted from using any content providers (app developers) you want. That's my beef.

Again - that's Apple the OS provider, not Apple the iPhone manufacturer. You can use an Apple Computer to watch all the porn videos you want, or go online and download smut to your hearts content - Apple does not stop this. See the distinction?

For some reason - they feel the phone is different. I can't imagine why. Maybe that's why they don't include wireless phone service on the iPad...

Just wait until they start buying up the tv networks... :icon_ devil:

I understand the difference between the hardware maker and the OS maker. I understand that it's the OS maker that is putting in the restrictions. But it's the same company as the hardware mfg, and you don't have a choice of OS. So it comes to the same thing. I'm not even sure what I'm arguing at this point. :)

I don't have a problem with network TV restricting content they choose to restrict because the network TV isn't the only content provider I can go to on a TV. But with Apple, I can't just go to another OS. (well, I can, and I did, by going with Droid). But if I were an iPhone owner, I'd be pissed that my content provider was making decisions for me about what I'm allowed to do with my device. I don't think it's that hard to see my point of view. Anyway, since I don't have an iphone, I really don't care that much about it. Just the principle of the thing, you know?

P.S. Regarding the comment that Apple wants to keep its image clean. If they want that, then they need to ban anything sexual on all Macs and other Apple hardware. Just doing it on their iphone app store is being arbitrary and hypocritical.

They better ban internet use on their phones then too! LOL! I see how they want to keep their image clean....but with the internet p%rn industry making 10's of billions every year, I would think apple might like a slice of that pie! :P

being unfamiliar with iphones, and really droids to, is this a ban in place on each phone, or just there sponsored app store. could you buy apps somewhere else? that would change my opinion on this.
