seriously, limiting characters is so outdated. I think verizon is just messing with us by only allowing 160 characters to any other carrier.... almost everybody can receive a huge message these days.
The limit isn't some arbitrary magic number Verizon set. It's an arbitrary magic number the Creator of text messaging set. Basically, it's a size that allows text messages to fit between voice data packets on a TDM (time division multiplexed) network. It is pretty much set in stone for inter-carrier communication and probably won't even change with 4g. Just get handcent or chompsms and enable automatic message splitting.
I've never seen an MMS on the phone. Where's it at because that's news to me. I realize it does MMS but I've never seen a specific place to tap for MMS.

i have received messages of 800+ characters from att, and tmobile... it just automatically breaks it up into 160 char blocks. i want to be able to do the same

ya i used to do that on my voyager, but as previously mentioned by another user, im having trouble figuring out how to do it on this phone without attaching a picture
Interesting side not my friend told me about the other day: Apparently if I reply to one of his SMS using the reply-by-email function on Google Voice, the message will automatically get broken up into multiple 160 character messages and they will be ordered with number tags (1., 2., 3., etc).
Looking though Handcent it has an option to convert a message to MMS if it is more than 3 messages long (I guess that means over 540 characters). There may be something in the market that will allow other options.
I haven't confirmed with anyone I text but I think Verizon is now splitting text messages into 160 character blocks automatically whereas before they used to just send the first 160 I think
