At the FINAL point of hopelessness...

Should I start from the beginning, as in unlocking again. Or just start rooting process again?
See told ya I would eff it up :-)

You can only unlock once. If you get into HBOOT, you should see S-ON and *Unlocked* If not then yes start the unlock again.
If you're unlocked then rooting is done in AmonRa so, that's were we've been.

When I got to HBoot it says:
*****UNLOCKED***
VIGOR PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-2.11.0000
eMMC-boot

I downloaded vigor 3.14 again and tried to root by using the following. The phone reboots after the last command but Fastboot is highlighted in red
the choices below include Bootloader, Reboot, Reboot Bootloader and power down. The phone is connected to the laptop throughout.

So after that monster post, did something to reboot the phone.. it rebooted and recovery was an option.. then the developer menu.. accepted the install.. finally installed super user. How can I test that it's rooted?

If you still have quickboot try that, otherwise you can get a root app from the market like root checker or wifi tether.

I assume you can flash as often as you want till you find the ROM you like, right? Does it wipe out the programs/data every new flash?

Yes and YES. It's a tremendous pain but when I'm trying a new ROM I tend to not set anything up immediately. I test the ROM to see if it's stable enough or if I like it enough to live on. If it is, then I start dropping my apps back on it.

I'm on my own bastardized version of CleanROM Developer Edition 1.2. Probably the last ROM I'm flashing until AOSP or the Sense 4.0 ROMs get Bluetooth working.
