Just switched form iPhone and AT&T to Droid
I originally was a Verizon customer until the first iPhone was introduced. Purchased one the first weekend and set up an AT&T. Later upgraded to the iphone 3G and finally an iPhone 3Gs. Incidentally, I had unlimited minutes, data, special rates for Canada and limited texting. My bill usually ran from $160 to $200 per month (depending on how many minutes I used to call Canada).
About a month ago, I noticed that at the top of the phone, instead of saying ATT next to the bars, I would see "Off Network" displayed. I called AT&T to inquire and later received a letter from them. The "Off Network" means that you are using a partner tower that they do not own. The terms of their contract limit the usage of non-AT&T towers to 50%. They did give me the opportunity to cancel my contract without penalty (otherwise it would have cost me $150 to cancel). It is at least an hour drive to get on one of their 3G networks.
After researching this for a couple of weeks, I went to the local Verizon store and purchased a Motorola Droid with a 2-year contract. All of the area around here is in the EV/DO 3G network and the service is excellent. In fact, the internet speed is greater than I was getting with a previous DSL provider on a home network.
As far as the Droid phone is concerned, I find it to be an excellent product. I am still getting used to the Android operating system but like it. If Verizon gets an iphone in the future, I will probably purchase one (not because it is a superior hardware product) but rather how it integrates with their me.com system and Itunes, etc.
