In a well lit place cover your front facing camera with your thumb, the screen will dim shortly after. The sun is definitely bright enough to cause the ultra bright mode, a really bright lamp would be needed to cause it.

I only use cinema mode.

I received a replacement phone last week and the screen no longer has the dimming problem.

As weird as it sounds I could totally see a difference in the front camera lense between the phones.
Maybe Samsung changed the front camera somewhere along the line
