Battery & Android OS

Its some OS issue.

Do you have GSM mode off? Aka CDMA mode only?

Sent from my GimpDroid (Installed by RZR).

Yeah, I do.

What can I do to improve (pathetic) battery life *with extended battery* on unrooted Pro.

I have GSM off (CDMA only), AND extended battery (Motorola/ Verizon version) and STILL have terrible battery life. Per battery data, the display is what is sucking it dry (40% -ish; everything else in the 2 to 3% range). Set brightness level very low and sleep after 2 min...any thoughts? Had to recharge at noon during business trip (to 40% battery strength before noon); to 20% and yellow warning-zone by 5pm even with recharge to 60% over lunch.

I bought extended battery so I wouldn't have to carry a backup battery. Swap to backup from extended to regular requires carrying both back plates...would rather figure out how to optimize the extended battery...get it to do what it was built to do! Help?

Sleep after 2 mins?

That's way too long. 30 secs and I normally push the power button to lock and turn off well before that.

Thanks. I push power to turn off whenever I am not using...never just sits until 'sleep' kicks in. I will reset to 30 sec and see what happens.

FWIW, display seems to drain battery even when display is off qnd phone is in holster. Perhaps the battery fail is related to something other that display...any further battery life tips (with extended battery...short of rooting) welcome - thanks!

rocket_girl do you have live wallpaper running? If so that is another battery eater. If you have WiFi, GPS or Bluetooth turned on and not using them then you are wasting battery. Turn those functions off until you need to use one. If you any app running that is updating itself at certain intervals then that might be a problem also. For example, if you have your email app checking for email every 10 minutes...your using battery when that happens. There are a couple of ways to minimize the battery used to receive email...one way is to have emails from your POP accounts forwarded to gmail or set gmail to go fetch email from you other accounts and send to your phone (much like BIS if you're familiar with Blackberry). In either case this greatly reduces battery usage because your phone doesn't have to "power up" to go get email...it is pushed to you. Just a few suggestions.

Thanks- great tips re: email.

Already keep other features off except when using (gps, bluetooth, wi-fi...) and do not use live wallpapers, so I do hope the email tips prove to be helpful.

Are there instructions on line for setting up Gmail 'fetch' from corporate email? Currently getting outlook email via corporate sync. Had Blackberry, but did not use BIS...

I didn't realize that you were using corporate sync. Leave that alone and use gmail fetch to get your other email accounts sent to your phone. Go into your gmail account>setting>Accounts and Imports>Send Mail As>Send mail from another address. Provide the information gmail ask for and select save. Gmail will then "poll" your POP accounts and push that email to you. You can setup more than one POP account. Depending on how active your POP accounts are depends on how ofter gmail will "poll" your accounts...the longest period I've seen is 1 hour and the shortest I've seen is every 3 minutes. This will not have an impact on your corporate sync mail. Hopefully that is working good for you.

I didn't pay any attention to the Android OS percentage before I tried this, but what I did do helped with my battery usage substantially.

I have absolutely no use for more than one profile, the work profile and weekend profile are useless to me, everything I need fits on the Home profile with room to spare. I had read that multiple appearances of apps would use extra power, so I trash canned everything on every screen of the work profile and the weekend profile, that helped my battery usage substantially. I had a thread on it somewhere. Worked for me. Good luck.

Excellent point. I have done the same thing, and you're right, it does make a difference.

I use LauncherPro (pay version) so I don't have separate 'home/ work/ weekend' profiles. I do have several screens, but removed duplicate app/ widget placements long ago after reading that advice here.

Appreciate all the info- keep it coming. Thanks!

Are you in a poor signal area? Also there is no need to carry a slim backplate as the standard batteries fit in the extended plate just fine.

I have a extended battery and carry a spare extended battery and 2 standard batteries with me. I've been caught in way too many airports without access to a charging plug.

Thanks. Guess I might be stuck with that (can relate to the airport thing: even in airline lounges, too many devices...too few plugs!).

Started with two standard batteries and a second battery charger... and had to do multiple swaps in any given day. Thought extended battery would help...disappointed with results.

Would love to come closer to the 24-hrs+ people are getting with the extended battery..heck a full day would be great!

rocket_girl - I have no idea how many phone calls you make/receive during the day or how many text/email you process on your pro. I have the extended battery, process about 40 emails a day, make or receive about 10 phone calls (each less than 10 min conversations) and with starting out the day (usually 6:30 AM) with a full charge I can go till about 11:30 PM and have about 55-65% battery left. I do turn my phone off before going to bed and fully recharge before turning it back on in the morning.

I don't use my phone much in the workday. My current workplace does not have Verizon coverage. I charge the phone every night (I just plug the charger in and leave the phone on). I plug the phone in to my car charger whenever I'm in my vehicle and it is certainly good from 7:30 am until midnight each day. That's on a standard battery. I suspect it wouldn't be as good if the phone wasn't on airplane mode the first seven hours of that time, but I would just plug it in more if I were using it more.

I process 3-ish quick calls per day, with much longer conversations every several days. Always plugged in during the latter.

I process a couple dozen emails each day...I read many and save most to respond on PC. I read quite a bit of news (also plugged in). 50-is texts per day.

I don't use any media (no music or videos). Biggest problems are during business trips, when I need to be reachable via phone or text (on roaming networks)...and might spend several hours noodling around online or playing Words w/ Friends (one opponent, not multiples). I do know to just turn off (or use airplane mode) where signal is weak. During last conference, hardly made it until noon, then recharge was too slow to reach 100% again before afternoon sessions began. I will be packing the spare batteries and the extra charger they come with.

Seems like there must be a D'oh setting I could change...I am a light enough user that I should be able to get more life from this thing!
