Is there really any app that extends battery life like juice defender for example. Or is it just a bunch of baloney.

Yes, there are apps that do that. With a caveat. All the apps that I have seen that claim to do that do it by modifying the settings, which you could do yourself. Things like the screen brightness or turning off the wiring or bluetooth. Of course there are many other things that some apps change, and it is nice to have one application to do several of them.
Plenty of advice in the forum on specific apps...

I used juice defender for a long time. Then I started doing everything that it does manually, and not using a running app to save battery, and I get even better battery life.

WOW!. you guys werent lying about this one. My battery drains so quick and the SECOND this was downloaded it improved my bat life. EXCELLENT!!
