Your experience isn't unusual; in fact, just a couple of months ago Verizon settled a lawsuit that was brought against it for a similar tactic (Post Tech - Verizon Wireless plans $50M refund to customers; admits wrong charges). You seem to have gotten it worked out with customer service for the moment, but if it happens again, remind the CS rep that FCC rules prohibit Verizon from pulling this kind of crap. Meanwhile, if you don't want to root your X, I second the recommendation to download Launcher Pro and hide the app (and any others like it). That's what I did.
