Bluetooth voice dialing

Was on the verge of getting the Droid Incredible until i saw this thread and a similar one elsewhere. I totally rely on voice dialing.

So i downloaded the Incredible manual (from Download HTC Droid Incredible user manual), which on p. 41 describes the "Voice Dialer."

So is the following correct?: With the Incredible, you CANNOT initiate voice dialing with a bluetooth headset, but you CAN give voice dialing commands on the bluetooth headset after you've initiated voice dialing on the phone itself.

Also, from the manual, p. 41 (plus a youtube video), it appears that to initiate voice dialing requires pressing the softkey with a dot inside a circle (left of the Phone softkey), then scroll down to the "Voice Dialer" icon, then tap that icon. Is that correct? That seems a lot to have to do to initiate voice dialing -- which one uses for its convenience! With my LG Voyager and previous E815, one just presses a single hardware button and then start the voice command. Android phones are supposed to be the ultimate in customizability -- is there any way to change the settings on the Incredible so that voice dialing can be initiated with just one step? A macro? A widget?

Thanks to anyone who can confirm that my characterizations of how voice dialing on the Incredible works are correct (or incorrect).

You can place a voicedial icon on the home screen. Still have to unlock the phone to use it, but you then only have to press one icon. Many bluetooth headsets will still do last number dialed hands-free. You just can't voicedial.

No Android phone has a bluetooth voice dial from the phone itself.. You need to purchase a 3rd party app from the store..

Voice dial that comes in the Android system uses the microphone and speaker on the android phone.

Really, that's funny check this link out:

Motorola Milestone getting its Android 2.1 update -- and nine home screens | Android Central

Wait a minute is the Milestone an Android phone, I forget LOL

Anyway, when is someone going to put this in a custom ROM for us Droid guys to use? dancedroid

This has been an issue for Android phones, google has a "bug" report open since Nov 2008 (see -> Issue 1181 - android - [VoiceDial] Voice confirmation for Voice Dialer - Project Hosting on Google Code ) so I doubt they will ever add code to Android to do it. AFAIK, the Moto Devour and a HTC device on Sprint are the only two Android phones in the USA which do BT Voice Dialing, and that is because they have Nuance added (not sure what the Sprint HTC device has).

For now, there are two possible work arounds if you want to use a BT Headset...

Voice Dialer HF (DFXmobile)
Choice Dialer

You still have to handle the phone to start them... and due to Android limits, they use the phone's mic and speaker until the call is connected.

Remember, if your car has built in bluetooth, it stores a phone book, you can use ITS BT Voice dialing to initiate a call. However, if you're car kit passes through to the Phone for BT VOice Dialing, then you're out of luck like use regular BT headset users.

What I'd like to see, is someone pull the Nuance VSuite from the Moto MileStone's 2.1 upgrade, and get it working on the Moto Droid, and the incredible once its rooted. BUT Since I'm not a "Rom developer", I don't know how possible or likely this is... Plus, with how long the Milestone 2.1 upgrade including Nuance has been out (for some countries), and I haven't read any chatter about bringing it to the Moto Droid, I don't know if anyone ever will.

The other work around is purchasing the Blue Ant Q1 which does allow 8 hands free voice calls. But that's all it allows. It is completely hands free and a heck of a good headset. It gets firmware updates on line. Very nice, I have one.

Voice Dialing via Bluetooth

I had an online chat with motorola on this topic. There is an update for the Android due out soon but they were unable to tell me if voice commands via bluetooth would be included. I previously had a Moto Q that worked well until recently which did this. Were the folks at Google so busy designing all the "higher functions" on the Droid that they "forgot" to include this? Seems like a major oversite considering how many states have enacted "hands free" statues.

Wow, so I had heard a rumor of this lack of functionality before I purchased the Droid a couple days ago. I just paired my bt to the phone and pushed its talk button and was dismayed to learn that it was true. I would have to agree that this is a major oversight. How hard can it be to program this considering almost every other phone has this capability? It's not that big of a deal for me because I can use my car's address book, but my wife doesn't have that feature in her car. Can you at least answer calls without unlocking the phone?

Folks, the code for BT voice dialing is in Android. Google just needs to get off their bums and improve on it before its ready for the average end user.

Motorola Droid users can see for themselves by trying my latest rom (beta).

Almost was a deal-breaker in my case as well... but I reupped with VZW with the faith that someone, not sure who, but someone will finally figure out that this is a basic fix and will implement it.

You get the Incredible rooted for me, and I will work on enabling BT voice dial :D

Well I actually have a Droid...but you got BT voice dialing to work on your latest Rom beta?

As much as can be said for working...yes.

Its not perfect, but its something. Try it and let me know what ya think.

its the 1.3.1 beta. Beta 3 is actually almost the final product.
