This has happened to me, twice actually. Went to verizon, with miui installed, and they had no problem giving me a new one, on the spot, and didn't have to pay anything. Couldn't see that miui was installed, since the screen wasn't working.

Congrats on being dishonest!

How exactly is that being dishonest? His screen was busted so he brought it in and they replaced it. It was a hardware issue unrelated to rooting/romming and he didn't say that he lied about anything. They simply didn't ask.

If you're going to be self-righteous at least make some sense.

Rooting = voided warranty, correct?

Even if that presumably is the case, that still doesn't make him dishonest. Should he have gone in there and said "Look my screen is busted, but I'm rooted, so my warranty is voided, right?"

You would have to be an idiot to:
a) Not try to get your defective hardware replaced under warranty
b) Voluntarily tell VZW your phone was rooted, thus potentially preventing said hardware from being replaced.

Even if he had told them he was rooted, if they had any decency they would have replaced the phone anyway since it is not a software related problem. The real question is why does it bother you (as someone who has rooted their phone) that someone who was rooted got a replacement under warranty?

exactly, gotta be smart. what they dont know wont hurt them (althought it will:icon_ banana:) but yea you really would have to be dumb to voluntarily admit that you have a rooted phone, especially when theres no way of seeing that its rooted!

Kind of a Dont ask dont tell policy. Verizon Rep didnt ask him about being Rooted. So why would he say " OH by the way will you still replace my phone if its rooted"

Makes no sense!

From the last few posts: honestly, most employees aren't stingy about what they'll take back, they simply don't care as long as there is no physical damage (I.e. your phone isn't a smoking heap of plastic). Nobody assumes that your phone is modded in any way, and few would care if it was. Working for t-mobile in the past though, I have seen posts come onto the account a month or two down the road due to out of warranty damage like the reaaaally internal liquid damage indicators showing up after a dismantle..

Well, to add a happy ending to this story, I found out that TODAY is the last day for my 1-year manufacturer's warranty so I promptly got my butt over to the Verizon store to get a replacement! They took one look at the phone, agreed that it was defective and gave me a new (refurbished) Droid.

... just finished rooting it dancedroid

What "makes sense" is to say "I either need to unroot or sbf before I take this in. Or do an insurance claim with it still rooted". You know, taking responsibility instead of cheating the system because "no one will know because they can't see it"?
It "bothers" me because a) I'm a rep and see stuff like that all day, everyday. I wish I had a dollar for every "Idk how my phone got wet so you should replace my phone for free...no I don't have insurance." I've heard. b) Just because Verizon can't see it, doesn't mean Motorola and other manufacturers can't. And we wonder why these phones are getting locked down..?
I agree that rooting had nothing to do with it and see what you're saying but, whether its manufacturer defect or not, warranty doesn't exist once you root unless you unroot/sbf...period.

Its not going to hurt them at all. They rooted, so what? Its going to take verizon, or motorola, what, 2 minutes to get back the original sbf if its rooted? Not that big of a deal. It doesnt hurt the phone, and his defect wasnt about being rooted. Chill out.

Re-read what DroidDOES said. The phone was rooted. Voided warranty. Asurion insurance claim - not an issue. No insurance - you took the chance and rooted the phone. Screen broken unrelated to rooting - true. Turning in a phone that has voided warranty - dishonest. Possibility that it could come back to bite the person who turned it in rooted and returned to manufacturer - yes.

Ah, i guess. I would have done it too. Im sure they send them back to motorola, and its not like they dont know how to fix roots. Just my opinion.
