Can the Droid act as a WIFI device for a laptop?

did this the other day, connected the droid to a pc w/o a wireless card to download some updates for it. just grab the wireless tether app from google (its free) and connect your phone to ur wi-fi and i'll work as a wireless card. it also works with the usb wired tether app and the froyo native usb tethering option in the settings menu.

Nate

I only need to do this a few times a year so having a cord is no big deal if I don't have to go through with this rooting thing.

Except...he'd rather not root:)

Rooting is easy...usually. But we've all seen the posts where someone is stuck for hours, or days.

So If i am reading this correct, the droid can act just as a wifi card to connect to a wireless router and not use Verizon's 3G data?

Some of these posts are a bit difficult to read. LOL

Your Droid can connect to a wireless router and use that router for internet access instead of using Verizon's network.

You can connect your laptop to your Droid via USB and use the Droid's internet connection as a gateway for the PC.

If the Droid is using the Wifi Router then I suppose you could connect the Droid to PC and let the PC use the Droid's internet through that wireless router...but what would be the point of that? LOL Just connect the laptop to the wireless router.

Hope that cleared it up.

Keep in mind that your service agreement says you can not connect your Droid to another device and share internet. It uses terminology like Tether by USB. The way I read it it is illegal (by TOS) to use PDANet by USB (bluetooth should be OK). But nothing says you can't connect wirelessly and share that way. Now...I know that was not their intent when they wrote the TOS. That would be silly to say you can't connect by USB but you can do it wirelessly. But that is what they wrote so as long as I don't sign a new contract I maintain it is pefectly within my TOS to connect wirelessly. Using PDANet you are technically violating the TOS. No one will ever catch you...but will you sleep well at night?

I do.

Yes, but the thing is you MUST have your phone's Wifi turned on or else it will obviously use Verizon 3G network. This way, if for whatever reason you need to get a PC without a Wireless card online, you can use your phone as a makeshift wireless card and connect to your Home Internet. Like I said earlier I had to repair a PC with no wifi card and needed to get drivers and stuff for it. just plugged in the phone and let used my company's wireless internet connection instead. Verizon shouldn't be able to trace that since your not on their network. Hopefully this answers your question.

...and yea I am sorry I didn't read through to see that you did not wish to root the phone.
