Phone battery power has come a long way but the bottom line is no smartphone has all day use (heavy).

I might wish to disagree with you on this one. My MAXX has blown me away with its battery use. Right now I'm at 76% with 1:44 of screen time and over 11 hours of up time. I've yet to drain this monster on a full day's use.

I would also recommend something from Samsung. I love my Note 3. I also love Moto, but a removable battery is a nice thing. I just might still be using my Razr if my battery lasted more than 4 hours these days.

I'd suggest a motorola smart phone for vanilla android, you'll get a good sense of what basic android is...but if you want a phone that does a lot of cool "stuff" Samsung or heck...grab a refurb droid DNA that's actually a pretty cool device too....
