Can't delete icons & folders from home screen

Hi, and thanks in advance. When i drag icons (game icons, etc.) to the trash, they won't delete. I wait for the icon and trash to turn red before releasing, but then the icon is still on the home screen.any suggestions? Any other way to do this?
