No need to download anything at all unless you have an older Windows 7 box. If your windows settings are set to automatically look on windows update for drivers, just plug it in, wait a minute and it shows up as "Galaxy Nexus" in My Computer. Open it up and it is no different than any other external usb drive.
You don't need mass storage to be able to transfer files. It has MTP just like the Honeycomb tablets. People seem to be getting it to work just fine so maybe you should post more info.
