I'm running a rooted Razor HD with 4.1.2 Jellybean. I can't find a way to move the files to the SD card. I've tried several apps none of which could either. Is this something that can't be changed with my version and phone?The ability to move apps to your SD card was removed by Google with 4.1 I believe it was. (even for rooted devices) If you can update your device to 4.2 you can use this app. AppMgr III App 2 SD - Android Apps on Google Play

This might be of some use. Not sure as I do not have the device nor am I familiar with Moto phones on Verizon.
If you update over the air, yes you will likely lose root. Your best best, since you're already rooted, is to flash the latest rom or firmware through recovery, or see if there's an update to your original root method.
The link grenefroggie provided would be a great starting point. Hopefully one of our Maxx users can chime in and offer a good suggestion.
