Clockwork Recovery question

I'm new to Droids (Droid X) and am trying to install some themes I've found. Some of them mention using Clockwork Recovery; I have no idea what this is or what it does. Can anyone link me to some Droid Basics on how Droids are setup, rooting, etc.?

PLEASE do some reading though before doing anything like this. a theme installed teh wrong way can brick the DX (not trying to scare you, but its riskier than using the droid)
