Counterpoint: Android surging because it gives consumers the gift of choice.

I think everyone is making great points. I laugh at the notion that Apple has better features and apps. I will give a great example of how android won over a die hard (ex) apple fanboy that i know.

He went to the apple store to get an IP4. He waited in line for 2 hours. The reps were going over the various features of the phone while he was waiting in line. He finally got the phone and took it home. When he got home he realized that he would need to upgrade an entire OS before he could sync his ip4. Like, he literally couldn't use the phone because of this. I have never owned a mac but i believe he was running OSX and needed the newest version to use the IP4 with his macbook pro. This was going to cost him around 130 dollars. No one at the apple store told him anything about this. At all. he was there for 2 hours and they didn't bother to mention that his OS was not compatible. So they wanted him to pay the ridiculous price for the new phone, and then spend well over a hundred dollars more to upgrade his os, which by the way, worked perfectly with his 3g. He took the phone back the next day and went and bought a DROID X. He has been thrilled ever since. He says he will never give another dime to apple because of this horrible experience and the ridiculous price gauging that took place.

Again, i'm not a mac user, so if any OS's i mentioned aren't right, i apologize.

Android is great. My mom (who is on at and t) just bought the new galaxy s phone. She didn't even consider an ip4. After she saw my brothers G1 she loved it so much more than the iphone... a freakin' 1.6 device. My mom is NOT techy. She does NOT know what root means. To me, this is the "consumer" that Mr. Siegler is speaking of, and she went straight to android, no questions asked.

Yes, the Iphone will sell a lot more when it comes to verizon. Yes, the iphone is a beautiful device, and the interface is great. But you must pay for EVERYTHING, and you are on LOCK DOWN. Isn't it true that you couldn't even change the background of the iphone home screen until recently??? Thats ridiculous!

I have always blamed apple of purposefully holding back features so they can come out with the "next" version. Take the ipad...no camera...no usb..Come on, these are features that are readily available that people WANT. Jobs leaves them out because he knows he can just put em in next year and everyone will come flocking to drop another 500 bucks on a device that just isn't up to par with android.

Android will continue to grow. The advertising campaign for the droid line by verizon, imho, is the number one reason people want droids right now. Not a lot of people knew about em before the campaign, and everyone knows now.

I was an early adopter of the legacy android device, the g1. I had it for over a year and i loved it, and still do. I gave it to my brother when i got my moto droid last march and he still uses it daily. When verizon offered me an early upgrade after only being 6 months in to my plan last month because of a few defective droids, i jumped on it. I sold the good moto droid i got in exchange for the bad one to a good friend of mine, now he's hooked on android. Now, i am the proud owner of a Droid X. Its rooted. And today, i used wifi tether in the car on a road trip so my brother could connect the g1 which he doesn't have a data plan for (uses wifi at home only) so he could get online while going down the road. Try that with any Icrap.

Chris

Oh yeah, I completely forgot about the wallpaper thing! Way to go crApple!! Hahaha!!

Oh man I'm loving this thread!

I agree with all the apple bashing here just let me say that. I tricking hate apple. I physically hate them. And here are the reasons. O 2 years ago i go and buy a 80 g ipod classic. Cause i do factory work and hey what better then to listen to anything u like while u do it. So i got the classic and my girlfriend has the newest nano 16g. We both love our ipods very much. We all love music and audio books here. So naturally a devices like those where well loved around here. Some time goes by we build a very respectable library. Bought alot utorrented alot. Either way we have/had a great collection. Now when i say bought we bought alot! Cause you have to support the artist you love and enjoy...right....right. so time goes by we accesorize the house the cars. Now we have ipod availabilty everywhere.and some of this is my fault i should've backed up the library. But there was a mishap and we lost the library with no recent back up. OMG! it was terrible. I was unaware that once something is on an ipod there's just no getting it back nope its just on there stuck. Gone doesn't mean dick. Cause if you plug it in and sync it o it wipes the ipod(what a great feature apple love that) so we buy a external program that allows us to retrieve the said such content. So were all hey cool no need to back up. O and apple didn't have the feature of downloading your purchases songs at the time.and then a couple months later. I don't know if it was really a couple months long enough for a newer version of itunes to come out. And then the computer crashes o no big deal we got the program right. Nope can't use it with the new itunes have to buy another one. Hahaha. So we got the new computer still haven't purchased the new program cause i refuse to spend anymore money on anything apple related. Because even after putting purchased songs on there from the ipods. Which by the way itunes will not let me retrieve all of our purchased material. And when u call them they do nothing nothing thousands of dollars in music books and stuff and apple has said shove it buy another program. Well steve jobs you can suck it. We will never give you another dime. O and after being loyal apple users for so long buying our music through them and all that wouldn't u know they offered us a discount yea fricking right. But hey i bought two albums from amazon for my droid x. And they seriously sent me coupons for the next purchase in like five minutes. So now we both have droids. I the X her the incredible. We love them use them all the time music books everything thank god for android. We are very grateful for these devices thanks. Oh and hey steve just know that the atmosphere of hell is greed. Just saying. So yep needless to say we are faithfull android owners. I will not jump ship if it comes to big red. Thanks for listening to my little rant guys lol

Wow what a surprise, this turned into another bash Apple thread..........my head hurts

sent from the great depths of my phones internet (thanks Al Gore)

A very well written article, thanks. I agree with most of your points and appreciate the fact that you used data to back up your assertions, unlike many tech writers these days. I do have an issue with one thing you said though:

"With AT&T being the larger of the two carriers, it is easy to assume that over half the devices were most likely sold by AT&T."

I do not this this is easy to assume since I am pretty sure the Galaxy S is the first attractive TMO Android phone to come a long in a long while. I would like to see data to back up that statement entirely.

Also to those arguing about the app markets, I am sorry, but to argue that the Apple App market offerings is anything but better than the Android App market offerings is ludicrous. Not only does the Apple market have more apps, it has more polished apps and also far, far better games. Now, this is beginning to change, but the app market is one place where Android currently lags behind Apple.

ya mind sharing what apps/games are missing from android? and what features are better? anyone can make random claims like that, BACK IT UP.

I think there are 2 things that people routinely say about the iphone as an advantage over androids. That would be music player.. You can't beat it sorry, i'm not a fan of apple but I've listened to music on both and well apple wins on that category. Second is the ease of use of the device, while andorids aren't hard to use, they are a bit more technical then iphones. Where i work we get many students that come in, and many have wanted the iphone because they were on verizon, but after actually getting an android and playing around with it, they changed their minds and they really could care less whether iphone comes to verizon anymore. I think the second thing is more a stigma to android than anything else.

ahhh doubt it i believe the consensus is that windows>>mac thats why hackers dont make viruses for mac, thats what ive heard

The reason that hackers go after windows is because there's where the majority of systems are that they could hit. It's about sheer numbers. Would you rather infect 1000 computers or 1 million. The fact of the matter is that more businesses / homes run windows, and that's who hackers are aiming at. Now if the numbers were reversed you'd see them going after iOS rather then windows. The fact of the matter is that proof of concept viruses have been written for iOS and malware can still infect iOS.

While i agree with you on a small part of this, apple does have quite a few more polished apps then android, but they also about have 10 fold just as useless ones also. If android has 1 out of every 10 apps that is useful, i would make that number around 1 out of every 1000 apps that is useful with apple. I've seen both markets and for the most part they are equally as bad. The reason that apples is even remotely better is because they've had it out for alot longer then android has had theirs out.

I agree with that, we have what like 200 fart apps as opposed to 1000 on the Apple store :-)

I guess I just get a sense of quality from a lot of the apps I have seen on people's iPhones that I don't get from apps I see on Android phones, especially in the game category. All of the major apps that people use are either on the Android market or have an equivalent that works as well. And this is just from the few times I have played with friend's iPhones. And honestly the more I think about it the more I think the gap is in games. We need games on the Android market badly.

You will start to see more and more apps that look polished for androids now that apps can also be stored on SD cards, or at least most of the app can be. Games is where it was hard to only use so many MB's for their game, now that they can potentiality use alot more, hopefully this will be a good thing :)

Here is how I see it....

Without the iPhone there would be no Android phone... ( My opinion )

Without the Moto Droid Series the new iPhone 4 would have far less capacity and features. Apple does not like to put too many desired features in one product cycle. Only competition from Android forced them to step up the feature set.

In April of this year, my Company ended it's company phone plan. Instead, they give us a monthly allowance and we can get what ever phone/plan we want. I though I wanted an iPhone, but AT&T does not cover a full 2/3 of my sales territory in Georgia with 3G. Verizon covers about 99% of it with 3G. I need to occasionally use the 3G network as part of my work as an engineer for my sales organization. When I found out that I could tether the Droid and I could not tether the iPhone, I decided to get the Droid. I use Mac's for my personal computers and PC's for my work so I am comfortable using either.

At first I was quite disappointing with the Droid. It was so hard to figure out how to get movies and TV shows on my phone. iTunes ( I really do not like the program ) does make it easy to sync media with the iPhone. Through a lot of internet searching and work, I found the magic settings in Handbrake that make the movies and shows look great on the Droid. I finally figured out how to export my Playlists in iTunes and get them to work on my Droid. The 2.1 update made me a little happier with the phone, but I still wanted an iPhone. I finally rooted my phone back in June and put Froyo 2.2 on it and really started to enjoy the phone a lot more. However, Froyo broke Pandora ( quality is still worse then 2.1, yes even with a ROM with the Google patch ) I can no longer log into my companies Wifi network( It Worked fine in 2.1 ). I am a software developer and been around computer most of my life, I think these issues will really confuse the casual user.... ( I know they do my wife )

I like the phone being open, but I do wish Google would spend a little more time fixing these annoying bugs they seem to introduce in every new rev. Everythign Google does seems to be half ass in my opinion. They never seem to fully bake their products. If it was not for the On-Line Android community I would have thrown the phone out the window, broke my contract and purchased an iPhone.

In my opinion, Android phones are on par with the iPhone in terms of features and what you can do with them. There are even several nice thing the Android phones do that the iPhone cannot do. ( Like mounting it as a USB Drive ). I use it to move files between computers all of the time. However, the Android requires more work and more computer knowledge to use however. The iPhone wins hands down on the user interface however. It is just easier for a casual user to use and understand. There are also a lot of app for the iPhone that I wish Android had.

For example: I get my magazines through Zinio. There is an iPhone app and not one for Android. Zinio claims to be working on an Android app, but I have my doubts. Almost all new apps hit the iPhone first and several months to a year later they hit Android...

I am not sure if i would switch from Adroid to an iPhone if it ever comes to Verizon or not. However, if of the new Android Phones are as locked down and the Droid X, and Droid 2. I will switch..... Period.... If you have to play in a walled garden you might as well go with the best one....

> If the iPhone was available on Verizon it would sell double the amount it does currently.

Yep and I, like may others, would not even have looked at another phone.

Am I glad I did? YES I could not imagine getting an iPhone now.

OTOH my wife has a Droid X and still would rather have her iPhone back. Only reason she likes it better is the faster data network.

Let me stand up and pitch my 2c piece at the wall...

I told my wife toward the end of 2009 that I'd be jumping on the "smart phone bandwagon" as soon as Verizon started carrying Iphones. Then I started noticing cool commercials about something called "Droid" and what it "Does" ... coming soon.

I got tired of waiting and man that Droid was one cool looking gadget.

I jumped. And for me anyway, it comes down to one fact...
GOOGLE ROCKS.

Cool, I'm closest to the wall!

:)

from what ive read apple even went to verizon first and verizon told them they were asking too much and to kindly blow it out their arses!

I used to be a huge apple fan. I loved the iTouch, and I knew that some day I would have to get a iPhone. And if the iPhone had been on Verizon from the start, I would have an iPhone right now, and I would still consider Android a joke. However, such was not the case, and I got "stuck" buying a droid. I was actually upset that I was settling, when I really wanted an iPhone. However, here I am three months into it, and I love my droid. I have had a complete 180, and I am so glad that fate made the iPhone out of my reach. I have played with my friends' iPhone 4Gs, and it just kind of makes me angry how they lack any manner of customization at all. Even jailbroken, the options are painfully limited. I find myself doing a lot of bragging about how much better my droid is, and a lot of my friends with iPhones agree.
I still love my iTouch, and I believe that apple products are the best when it comes to mobile entertainment (I have not upgraded to the iOS 4 yet, and so I still have flash on my iTouch). However, side to side, Android takes the cake when it comes to the mobile communications device, IMO. Nothing apple does or says will ever bring me back to their camp, because I have become an Androider for life.

P.S. In response to the whole app thing, I have to agree that apple has more quality apps. However, that doesn't mean that Android doesn't have any. But, for anyone who wants to argue, let me point to the abysmal catastrophe we kindly refer to as the Facebook app. I don't feel as if more needs to be said, but just for the sake of my argument, let me do a comparison. The Facebook app for the iOS is a gift from the gods handed down to us poor mortals in order to allow us to better ourselves, while the Android Facebook app is a suitable substitute for the punchline of any joke, and would elicit an equal or better amount of laughs. "Knock-knock" "Who's there?" "Orange" "Orange who?" "Android facebook app!" *Both suffocate due to laughter"

There's my rant for the night. Thanks for listening/reading.

This is 100% true! Verizon turned Apple down due to no removable battery, no insurance, and their customers would have to go to an Apple store with any issues as VZW's techs would not be allowed to touch their phone. I for one say that was a wise decision. And we swear up and down that Big Red doesn't care about us! Hmm....

I cannot and will not understand, ever, how students of business and sustainable business models believe Apple is operating in a sustainable business environment at the moment. I'd never touch the stock, not in 10 years. I don't care how much money it makes over the next 3 years, the fact that the Apple flock/stock would literally die overnight were Jobs to retire sums up the whole experience - ego and marketing. No one talks about this volatility...why? They all on the kool-aid. Any bad news is bad news.

Anyone ever talk about Symbian 3 years ago? Google sure did. Android is allowing all the prior Symbian folks AND the COMPLETELY UNTAPPED 'DUMBPHONE' crowd to move to Android. All phones will eventually be 'smartphones,' because it doesn't cost anything for the manufacturer to make it work. Millions of people in 50-100 countries are diving into Android, coming up with ideas and making it work.

I cannot logically explain how/why Apple is doing the exact same thing to themselves with the mobile OS world that they did with the home computer world. Wait, I think it's because they love getting rich, convicing/exploiting the hell out of great marketing once in 20 years, banking the cash and then going back to the drawing board for a product to be released 10-15 years from now.

Android will be the standard operating system on all cellphone devices within 5 years. Think of all the old Moto RAZR owners and the droves of folks that owned the 'Snake' Nokia. Moms and pops and the majority of folks are going to buy the same old phone - and that phone will run and Android OS.

How could Apple change the whole game? Put Android on their phones. Would Jobs ever do that? No.

Empires and egos fail - but folks sure do enjoy the 'high.' It's a product life cycle on steroids. Diarrhea of an ego.

The fact that Americans learned to download .mp3s and burn them to CDs shows that if the ROI is great enough - people CAN become tech savvy.

Kinda why SetCPU and other root-friendly apps are some of the top apps on the Android App Market - but I thought most people didn't wanna root....

MS and HP can potentially do things with Win Phone 7 and WebOS, and RIM will continue to dominate the corporate enterprise environment. With as much cash as RIM made in the last 5 years, they have to have an 'Ace' up their sleeve somewhere.

Early bird (Apple) gets the worm, second mouse get's the cheese.

That second mouse happens to be dozens of phone manufacturers hundreds of carriers where everyone can choose the phone that fits THEIR need at THEIR price point - with the Android OS not limiting any of those two basic needs of a cellular phone owning consumer.
