Curiosity: Why Root the D3?

Do it!

@AHiLdesigns [OP]

I read each of your posts and you certainly have made some good arguments against rooting the phone. Therefore I must agree with a lot of what you say and have similar opinions.

For you I recommend not rooting, especially if you can't find a good reason for yourself! In my own defense, possibly as well as others, rooting is cool. I've been bit by the "bug", and I want to do more than what the average user can do with their phone if that person has the exact same phone. ENJOY your phone, and don't root it! Learn it in-and-out prior to rooting it so that you have a GOOD comparison of how your phone works in a completely stock state. Only when you get bored, and are seeking a little more life out of your phone, holding back on upgrading to the next best thing, should you get look into rooting your phone.

Like I said that is my personal opinion for you, and certainly may not apply to everyone.

Good luck!

@PetRiLJoe

Very sound advice! Thank you, I really appreciate it.

Lol, I'm old & busy... so sometimes I forget things like interest based cool-factor. Though as a designer the temptation is there for me if only to redo the UI with my own work. I suppose sating the curiosity of learning it in general is probably pretty fun, too.

Good shout, Joe!

Couldn't agree more with this !

For me, I want titanium backup more than anything. Really, google should make that functionality a part of android. When you set up the google sync, there should be an option to backup an app's user data. I hate having to start over with my grand prix story, or angry birds or stupid zombies. I was able to migrate the user data of those games from my d1 to my nook color, but not my d3.

And remove bloatware. There is no reason at all for vz navigator and google maps to both be eating up my ram.

I would say overclocking the cpu, but this phone is far beyond what any current app is capable of asking for, except maybe benchmarks, but those are useless anyway.

On a side note, i was able to restore all my angry birds data from my rooted DROID to my DROID3 last night. There is a free app on the maket called AngryBirdsBackup by developer Pierrick O'Murphy. I had to do a couple of extra steps to get it to work but it restored all my data perfectly.

Well... there IS a reason, however you probably won't agree with it. I know you're just pointing out the ignorance but Verizon is getting worse and worse as the newer phones arrive about bloatware. They're just taking advantage of an obvious way to money.. since they own the phone before you do!

Verizon wants to charge you like $10.00 a month for VZNavigator. Google Maps is awesome, but VZNav has features Google Maps doesn't have, and vice versa for features GMaps has over VZNav. Either way I like Google's better, which is money lost for Verizon because if I had bought a cellphone that didn't have Google Maps for free, I may have invested in it.

And all the other bloatware... either Verizon was paid to put it there, or they are getting paid by having it there. Either way I firmly believe it's all about the (extra, potential) $$ moolah $$ :frown:

yea, but they are both running in the background using up my ram. I don't like the redundancy of two apps that do the same thing both running at the same time...especially when I have never ever opened of of them.

I also wonder how much money verizon wasted in making their own app store.

I got the D2G in late January, and by mid-March I was seeing the effect that self-loading bloatware had on the system--and that was on that 1.2GHz processor! The RAM was full of junk like Skype and Sticky Notes. (Really? Sticky notes on a 854x480 screen? Spare me!) So, I rooted in order to freeze the junk away. My system got snappier, and I was able to do little customizations like new system fonts and battery icons. And the icing on the cake was being able to create a wifi hotspot. (I sell iPods and tablets at my store, so portable wifi is quite handy.)

When I got ready to add my fiancee to my phone service, it made sense for me to upgrade to the D3, and for her to inherit my rooted D2G--which was a huge step up from her sluggish, buggy Samsung Acclaim. Now we're both sporting good phones with keyboards, but... I wish I could root this D3 to once again dispense with the bloat. Seriously, Verizon, how much more lame could your Vcast Apps be?

Yes, I like the basic system, and the changes from Froyo to Gingerbread are nice, but I could still live without some things. And I miss my Titanium Backup!

Bloat bloat bloat bloat bloat...

But seriously, good lord with the bloat. If it weren't for the bloat, I seriously wouldn't even consider it. But the bloat is so ridiculously excessive, and insists on starting its sorry self and consuming MY RAM, that how can you not consider rooting to get rid of it all. I've never seen something so egregious in my life. It's like if I went to buy a new car and they painted advertisements and decals that could not be removed all over it. Yes sir, until this situation is resolved, my next phone will be a nexus, no question about it.

The only apps that I find running are the IM app, social networking app, and Backup assistant. I usually just kill them, and they don't restart until I reboot. It's a pain to have to dill them each reboot, but I can live with it until we get root.

There are other benefits to rooting that don't often get mentioned:

1) Adfree Android. Its a root only app that blocks most of the ad servers. Voila! WAY fewer ads on your phone. I pay for ad-free apps where I can because I ~hate~ advertisements on my phone. Its my PHONE not your billboard. Adfree Android takes care of the rest when ad-free versions aren't available.

2) Underclocking. On hardware this fast you can still get good performance while increasing your battery life. This combined with removing bloatware can really improve your battery life. It also cuts down on heat. Have you noticed you can cook with this phone? That can't be good for it.
