[ROM] CyanogenMod 9 [BETA] (DX) (8/19)

I've noticed that the button lights aren't on at all. Is there a setting that I'm missing somewhere?

Gummy has not so good battery life either

With my stock Droid X, I found that the largest user of battery power
was the screen. So, I set the screen brightness to the lowest level
possible, and it was OK for indoor use. When I would be outdoors,
then I would turn on Auto-brightness. I found this extended the
battery life considerably.

With CM9, the brightness level can not be lowered as low as
I was using. But with Gummy I can set the Dim brightness
level to "1", and keep the brightness level to the lowest
level for indoor use. Then when outdoors I can use the
brightness control in the notification area to turn on
Auto-brightness.

I only flashed to Gummy last night, so I can not really say
how long the battery lasts, but now that I have the
display brightness set to the minimum "1" I hope it will
be similar to the stock Droid-X.

I just flashed to CM9 Last week and love it! I guess i want to try out Gummy that everyone is talking about.

Can soemone give specific instructions on specifically what to do to go from CM9 to Gummy and back to CM9 (just in case)?

Thank you and much appreciated!

Battery on Gummy is about the same as on CM9. I had about 84% when I went to bed and woke with it somewhere in high 60% now an hour later its at 56%. I will try to lower brightness.

I believe you can just wipe data cache and dalvik. Flash and your good. Make a nandroid of CM9 First and you can just restore back to CM9 after you wipe data and cache and you will still be set up on CM9.

I'm very new to this, but this is what I did:

*** First store the two zip files on your SD Card in the root directory ***
*** the gummy zip file, and the motorola gapps zip file ***

Long-Press Power Button, then select reboot, then Recovery to go into Clockworksmod recovery mode
- volume up and down goes through the menu
- camera button selects an item on the menu, be sure to press the camera button all the way down
- power button goes up the menu system by one level

Under backup and restore, select "Backup" - this will make a backup of your existing system on the SDHC card under the clockworksmod/backup folder.
Press the power button to go back up to the main clokworksmod recovery menu.
This is how you can get back to your CM9 (if desired) and still have all your settings.

Under advanced, clear the Dalvik cache, press power button to go back up to the main recovery-mode menu
clear cache
clear data/factory reset
(I don't think the order of clearing these 3 items matters)
install zip from sdcard - select the gummy zip file
install zip from sdcard - select the Motorola GAPPS zip file
select reboot system now
It takes several minutes for that first boot to finish - be patient and do NOT pull the battery.

You will start off with the Google setup wizard asking your questions.
What was very convenient is that Google had previously backed up a list
of all my apps, and you will find your phone automatically installing
all your apps from the marketplace/playTing.
Google restored my contact list and my calendar.
(It is good to only use the google calendar so this calendar backup works)
You will still need to setup the apps, and also 5 Home screens,
and also system settings.
Setting Gummy up the way I like it took about two hours.

Make sure y'all change the Governor to something other than On Demand. I find that has helped my battery in a major way. That and undervolting

GUMMY

I know this is a noob question, but can someone explain gummy vs. CM9?

Gummy is CM9 but with features such as custom lock screens, soft keys built in, performance tweaks, custom wallpapers and more. CM9 is basically just bare bones compared to Gummy

GUMMY

LowVolt,

I was also interested and did some googling about Governor.

This is under Gummy settings -> Performance -> Scaling governor.

The default Governor is "on demand" - this means that when the CPU load gets high, that it will automatically raise the CPU clock speed, and then when demand is lowered it will slowly lower the CPU clock speed. This sounds reasonable.

The another governor option is "performance" - this means the CPU will have a high CPU clock speed all of the time. This is not a good idea as it should be high battery usage all the time.

Another governer option is "userspace" - this means that any user program can (if so programmed) change the CPU clock speed. Since few programs are capable of doing this, then this setting should keep the CPU clock speed low all the time. I'd imagine this will result is a smart phone which will feel slow under high CPU demands, but will reduce battery usage.

Howard

P.S. I am just a "junior droid" and I might be wrong.

@ howardz Thank you! that really helps!

and @ LowVolt, is what howardz described a "nandroid" just going through clockwork and backing up?

also i feel like if i dont do a factory reset that should keep some of the 5 screen app placements and things the same? maybe? or do i actually need to do the factory reset?

A nandroid back up will back up current from you are running just as it is now. So....... if you flash a new rom and don't like it you can do your wipes and restore your back up and your good to go. No set up required. Hope that helps.

Also when switching roms you want to wipe data and cache. I would not suggest flashing a rom without it. Unless of course you are already running it and just flashing the update. Then usually you can just wipe cache and flash.
