Or you can make an update.zip that adds files to your system/media so that they are easier to apply... thats what I did for alarms, ringtones, and such...
ok, i get what you mean by 'i'm using bama's'. I was too. i downloaded magiman7's 5.13 and did the same routine. wipe data/cache, install rom, ran DT a2sd 2.7.5.3 beta 4 script. i'm getting a different error now, which may be progress
su
a2sd check
/system/bin/bash: /system/bin/launcha2sd: no such file or directory
i recall seeing this in some other threads. i'll be back

Another possibly silly question - are they technically the same ROM, except tp4bama's has different styling/theme? Is the actual functionality the same between the two?
Well, I suggest that you search for RZR recovery 2.0.3. Flash it like you would a rom. Then use that recovery to flash miui. You'll find that it is faster and favored by many other as the preferred recovery.
Just as an anecdotal experience, the first boot after being in ClockworkMod to install the .zip, it hangs on the boot animation and I have to do a battery pull and reboot - the second time it always works the whole way through.
