D2G WIFI use for email?

I'm a newbie to Droid use, traveling in Mexico. A VZN salesperson said I could gather email at WIFI hotspots without using data. I can't seem to get it right to work.
Data sync is turned OFF, airplane mode is turned ON. WIFI is on and connected. No email comes in. What am I doing wrong?

Is email considered data?

Email just seems to come in at random for me. You could always use your browser.
