Good News! The dark mode option is now available in Android Messages. Android Messages users can eliminate the bright white background, instead switching to a darker interface that is easier on the eyes over longer periods of time. The new mode is available in Android Messages version 3.5, which brings the same Material Design that recently arrived on Google Phone and Google Contacts.

It's about time! Now, do I want to give up Textra? That's the question.

Just checked it out. The play store doesn't have 3.5 yet. They have 3.4 still.

Great circumstances that you have been mentioned about the dark mode. Glad to read about such a stunning news about the android sys..! Thanks

From what I read yesterday, Google pulled the Messages ~ Dark Mode update from the Play Store and even removed it server side for those that had already updated their app. Must be some bugs that they need to squash?

Just got an update this morning, but it's still 3.4 ??

Nope, not yet. Keep checking the Play Store app and wait patiently.

Looks like the update started rolling out again. My work phone just got the new Messages App update, with a Dark Mode option. I personally don't like the new app look or layout, but that's just my opinion. I don't really like the "material design" look. But many people do, so it's all good in the end. I also don't like Dark Mode in any app, but did enable it just to see how it looks. For those that do like dark Mode it should work just fine.

I just downloaded it to try it and even though it's version 3.5 it doesn't have dark mode. I'll try again later. I doubt it'll be better than Textra. That's been my text app of choice for years now but I'm willing to try it.

As much as I love Google, and one of the things that attracted me to Android was customization I gotta say: I don't like many of their apps because of the lack of settings. Compare Waze to Maps.
I install Messages every now and then. Check settings. See....hardly any. Go back to Pulse. Pulse that has had Dark Mode for years and way WAY more options.
Pulse and Textra kick Google's Messages ass in every way. And it's not even close.
See Pulse features here.
Settings, Advanced Settings, and Per Conversation Settings.
Im not giving all this up so I can see that your are replying when RCS finally gets supported on every phone and carrier...

Dark mode is the main reason I made the move to Textra. It's also the reason I use Type mail instead of Gmail even after Gmail added combined inbox. I can't wait until I can make the settings on my phone dark. That'll be nice.

My work phone received 3.5.053. the more I look at it compared to my personal phone, the material design type of change is growing on me...a little. Still no update on my Z2. Here is an example of Messages dark Mode on my Turbo 2. A test chat back & forth between my two different phones (testing U Connect hands free the other day).

It finally showed up on my phone. As far as appearance goes, I like it as much as Textra but Textra still had way more customization like font size. I may try it for a bit and see if I like it.
