Display so dark when receiving calls after sleep... anyway to change that?

When I get a phone call after the phone has been inactive for 10-15 minutes - the display is so dark that I can barely see where to grab the slide thing to answer the call... I've looked through the settings but do not see anything that would effect that behavior.

Just wondering if anyone else was having similar issues - the display seems to be normal if I was just using the phone within a few minutes before the call comes.
