Droid 2 Global Unlock & foreign SIM?

It has been done on consumer hardware...he wasn't "frauding".

Given the extremely valuable nature of this hack, I think it's very likely to be made available as a fee service.

My source said it is virtually impossible to figure out how to do without inside knowledge of proprietary code.

I am courious why the screenshot says "T-Mobil" and not "T-Mobile"?

Using D2G in US with VZW or other Simcards

While I can live with roaming on 900 / 1800 assuming it works with any SIM card, I do hope they correct this issue to enable the phone for all bands. Legally they are opening themselves up to litigation by advertising the phone as a quad band global phone.

It's issues like this that make me wish that the carriers would get out of the phone business and companies like Motorola would just sell unlocked, unbranded, non crippled phones at a non subsidized price.

Did any one ever get any farther with this? We just got a d2g to use on VZW on CDMA in the US, but also with a different simcard in the US to call outside-US numbers.
Thanks!

Droid 2 Global Roaming

For those looking to unlock the sim card you can get the code from Verizon Global support (908) 559-4899. I was able to get the code but when I place my international sim card in the phone and switch to GSM only I receive no signal. I have a case established with Verizon and Motorola as I'm not sure if this is a hardware issue or something else. I hope that someone here can call and verify that after entering the unlock code if they actually can make and receive calls.

You also need to put the phone into Global Roaming mode under settings!

i've tried a combination of things ... both codes i was given by verizon won't stick, getting '...unsucessful' error.

have a working foreign sim in the phone, set the radio to GSM.

i am rooted, not sure if this may interfere, so i tried it again after unrooting, no dice.

i used titanium backup pro to freeze some apps, but not sure if any of them would be needed by GSM components of the phone ...

does anyone have any ideas regarding this ? i saw another post of someone with the same issue.

verizon has asked that after resetting the device (i didn't reset, only unrooted) to try the codes again. they said that if they do not work, they will request to generate a new code which is going to take 24 hrs.

update:

the phone was defective. or simply unlockable. i highly recommend unlocking the phone as soon as possible or u risk not knowing whether u can use it at all overseas even with verizon's sim card

yes.

global support over the phone is more knowledgable than the store techs, so make sure you speak with vzw over the phone first if you run into an issue ....

when you go to the store they will make you go thru the same hurdles as you would have already. took me more than an hour to walk out of there with a new device.

Also AFAIK the device must be unlocked here in the US before it can be used overseas.

I have unlocked mine while already in Canada. Unlock code from online unlocker worked for me. I did not get the code from VZ (they refused to release it as I was brand new prepaid :))

What to do when you come back to the US?

Hi Gang, just joined the group (Bought Droid 2 global). I have two questions that I hope some of you might help me with. Anyone has traveled to the Dominican Republic and if so, which SIM card did you use or might work best othere there (Orange, Claro, etc). I am planning to call verizon before I leave the US in Jan to get the unlock codes so I dont know if I need to buy the Dominican SIM card first (which I will have to have a friend mail it to me)

Second question is, after you come back to the US, what is the procedure to start using the phone in the US? anything needs to be done? Do I need to call Verizon? I am assuming of course that I would have to take out the Dominican SIM card that I used during my stay.

Thanks in advance for your replys.

Check which operator has bettero coverage/prices.

As for switching between the Verizon and the foreign sim in the phone - all you need to do is to switch from CDMA to GSM/UTMS in the wireless settings menu. It will alter between the two accounts.
Of course if you use Verizon's SIM - it will always use your verizon account and number (but with roaming fees)
