Droid X sync with Outlook

Which part is Bill right about plumcrazy? Is it the part about Outlook users needing to "let go of Outlook", or the "fact" that the Droid X is a GMail phone and that people need to accept that? I am going to go out on a limb and say that that approach is a recipe for chasing people off, especially for those to whom the phone is merely a tool that they are trying to make work for them.

I could understand if the OP was a concern troll/iPHone fanboy trying to stir up the muck, but that obviously isn't the case. You don't tell people that their concerns are invalid and that it is their unwillingness to embrace solution "A" that is the problem, unless of course your objective is to reduce the readership to only those who think exactly like you do. Also, don't assume that a handful of posts means the same thing as "born yesterday".

Guys this is a google phone. All you have to do is go into your gmail account on line and to your settings Pick the tab that says accounts and settings. There is a specific link with instructions for how to synch gmail to Outlook 2007 by creating csv files. You transfer those files to gmail and then your phone syncs with gmail

So simple my wife no only did it, she can't understand how people are having a problem figuring it out. From that point on you work out of your gmail account.

With all due respect, Blackberry does not make owners change the way they do a sync. In reality neither does Apple, albeit they do force I-Tunes down the owners throat, BUT it does works on one's own PC. I think you are missing the point that some of us do not wish to put our contacts "out there". Google has already been exposed as a very lax company when it comes to personal privacy, "Mining" the information that is placed "out there" is a very real possibility (make that a probability) and I simply don't wish to give anyone that opportunity.

If google really wants to be of service to Android owners, they need to offer an "Out of the Box" conduit that provides the sync interface. Some of my business contacts are extremely sensitive and would not appreciate knowing that I have placed their information on a server that I have no control over. Google's approach and attitude is do syncing our way or sync it somewhere else. So I will choose, for the time being, to do it somewhere else even though I really favor the Droid X. I do hope that others will continue to tell us about their experiences with syncing using third party conduits. That might motivate me to take another go at the Droid X.

hookbill is right. i just prefer outlook, probably cause its always what i have done. the gmail thing is nice though. im just not willing to give up outlook just yet.

the companionlink/dejaoffice program works very well so far. took a bit to get it setup.

Are you using the Droid X? What version of OS on your PC? What version of Outlook on your PC?

I hear you..

Coming over from the Iphone this completely blew my mind. I'm completely in love with this phone but I have to be honest and say that this is giving me second thoughts.

Luckily Google Apps Premier is actually cheaper then rackspace which is where I'm currently hosting my email + domain name. I'm going to give it a try and see how it goes.

Had I known this before I bought the phone and fell in love with it I would have never bought it.

I was in the same boat for the first half day. I finally caved and did the Google Apps Premier (I have been a BB user since 2001), and I am so thrilled I did! I am a small business owner and get a ton of emails.

For the first time, I can sync my Outlook - including folders - with my device! So when I get an e-mail, I can file it in a folder (google calls them lables) on my device and it shows up as read and in the correct Outlook folder when I open Outlook. It's already saving me time with less duplication of effort. I can even determine which folders are synced to my device and for what period of time. For the first time, I can see emails I sent from outlook on my device, which will be extremely helpful when I am on the road.

From a BB lover for over 9 years, give it a try. It really is great. There is a learning curve, but just try and stick it out. At some point, I might just give up Outlook all together.

Are you using the DROID X? Are you able to sync with both a desktop AND a loptop without duplication or issue?

Droid X here, but only use a laptop. I would imagine it would work the same as it basically syncs from the cloud. I have had absolutely no issues so far. Everything syncs perfectly and have tested it extensively. Including originating from Outlook, Gmail and my device (Droid X). Calendar works great too.

I literally almost bought the Droid X back, tried this, and couldn't be more happy I did. It really will make things more productive with less duplication.

And - yes - it's $50/a year for the Google Apps with Outlook sync. However, it is WELL worth all the functionality, IMO. Mails are pushed instantly to your device and everything is synced, including calendar and contacts.

When I first got my Droid (back in November 2009), I was frustrated that I could not sync directly into my Outlook (2007) so I did research as to what was available to me. I looked at .csv files and even completed one - it was easy to complete (I believe there are instructions on google's gmail site). However .csv files were not for me as I needed updates to my contacts & calendar wirelessly. I already had a gmail account setup so I tried "google calendar sync" - it worked well but it still left the issue of my contacts. So I did more research on "sync software" that is compatible to both google and Outlook 2007 - I found gSyncIt. It cost me around $15 but I downloaded it and sync'd everything I needed (calendar, contacts) both ways....so now I can edit my contacts / calendar on either my phone or my laptop and they update. While this was the solution I was looking for, it may not be for you. I now have a Droid X and it is working with that phone as well (never thought it wouldn't).

PITBULL GUY...

Did it mess up your email in any way? and was the migration difficult?

I use imap through godaddy, not exchange, so im not certain if google premier will work for me....

any advice?

Didn't mess it up at all, but did a backup just in case. Contacts, calendar, mail and folders all came over perfectly.

It's not IMAP as it puts a copy in your outlook, so you can access everything offline as well.

Conversion/migration took a bit for me, just because I wasn't familar with Google and have my domain/email hosted on another service. I didn't migrate the hosting, but forwarded one e-mail account to my premier account.

A couple of tips:

1. If you don't want to go through changing the mail settings from you domain, just forward your mail to the testing e-mail address in premier they give you (you are charged $50 for each email account, but I only wanted mine switched over). Works perfectly.

2. After downloading the Outlook Sync tool and during migration, choose your current Outlook profile when prompted, and it will bring everything over.

3. At first I freaked because none of my mail/folders were in Outlook. It takes time for everything to migrate. I started it over a couple of times because I thought something was wrong. It shows in Outlook when the item (message/folder/calendar entry) it is truly migrated and synced with your google account. It took about 3 hours for everything to migrate (but it says it can take up to 24 hours). Just be patient and know that it's doing its thing in the background.

4. I have not figured out how to have other POP email accounts in my Outlook, but did a work around to have the other accounts sent to my phone or through the web.

Good luck. It really is a good tool once you get it up and running.

I request that this be pinned to the top of the board.

I'd think this would be a major concern for all of us business users - I know it is for me!

Still not sure how I'm going to handle this - although I admit I don't remember how HTC Touch with WinMo handles the sync with Outlook. If it is handled in the same manner, then no problem, but I think HTC Touch with WinMo handles POP?

The company won't order me a new phone until Aug 1st when my contract runs out, but I don't want to make a mistake and order a phone that gives me trouble with my business e-mail - after all, that's the primary reason I am getting the smart phone in the first place!

Okay, I just did some more research, and it appears that the Droid X (AND the Droid) both synch with Microsoft Exchange, so for any business users who use an exchange server (like my company) then you will have seamless synching without a third party app.

I'm pretty damned relieved now, and can't WAIT to get my phone!!!!!!!

The native Exchange ActiveSync app on the X is okay at best, if you want true enterprise connectivity that syncs everything, then Touchdown android app is the only way to go IMO. It's $20 but my company happily paid for it and it flawlessly syncs with my Outlook 2010.

Google Apps Premier vs. Regular Gmail?

@ Pittbull

Could you explain the main difference(s) between the Google Apps Premier as oppose to just adding individual POP email accounts in your gmail settings? I don't see the main advantages outside the extra storage space (25GB for premier)

Also, if i sign up my domain name for google apps premier, does that mean Google becomes the host of my website instead of my current one (1and1)?

thx

If you need Outlook, you will need the premier - it's the only way to get the outlook sync tool. Otherwise, you can use a tool to sync calendar, POP to download (not sync) e-mail and then upload cvs files back and forth from google to outlook to keep your contacts sync'd. Doing all that from one application was worth it to me.

You do NOT need to move your domain over for hosting. I just moved the one e-mail over. Technically, I didn't even do that as all my incoming mail still goes to my original host and I forward it to the 'testing' email google provides when you sign up for the account. I configured my outgoing mail in google to still go through my smtp (more so all e-mails come from my work e-mail address, etc.).

There is a 30-day free trial. You might want to try that.

Thx Pitbull I will try it but I use a outlook sync program called gsync and its easy and syncs my outlook info with my google account and it works fine thus far. I'm still not seeing why premier is better. Can you give an everyday example perhaps?
Maybe that will help me see the light thx
