Droid X Widgets

I just recently got the DX and of coarse the battery life is and issue. It's not totally unbearable but I really want to find out how to stop all the running services. Most of them are widgets in which I don't use. I have task killer but it will not kill the widgets. If anyone has any info on this I would greatly appreciate it.

delete the widgets then

long press the widget then move it to the app drawer (which should have turned into a trash can)
