DVD Catalyst

I see there is a PS3 option for the DVD Catalyst and I have a question on that.

One DVD I am actually having problems with is in .mkv file and it doesn't look right on my PS3. Any ideas on how to configure the settings so that I can burn it to a DVD-R and watch it on my PS3? I tried with another movie file to see if it's the .mkv causing problems but even that movie came out fuzzy and the aspect ratio was wrong.

So far, this is the best DVD burning software for the Droid I have used. Thanks!

The PS3 is VERY picky in what it plays and what it doesn't play.

when you convert your MKV's to Droid format, do they play on the PS3?

edit: I understand your MKV's are probably a hi9gher resolution that the Droid format uses, however, it helps with troubleshooting if you try them.

All I can say is thanks DVD catalyst. I tried the software and then bought it right away once I saw how easy and well it worked. One thing, is there anyway to convert my DRM protected movies that I bought on iTunes with this software? If not, what do you recommend? I use DVD decrypter and then DVD catalyst when I have the physical DVD but need a way to decrypt files already on my computer.

Thank you for using DVD Catalyst

iTunes purchased movies, as well as Digital Copies you find on some DVDs are wrapped in some form of DRM. There are a couple of programs out there (TuneByte for example) that use a recording method that can do something with these files, however, its usually easier to just rent and rip the DVD instead.

edit: DVD Decrypter is not really needed for DVD Catalyst, almost all DVDs work straight from the DVD without the need of additional software.

Gotcha. I tried Tunebyte but wasn't to happy with it, to confusing for me to pay for the full version. The UI is all over the place (my opinion).

Thanks anyways.

there are a few others (overhyped with affiliate links) that claim to do it, but they are screen recorders. You play the movie on your computer and it records in real time (2hour movie, 2 hour wait) . TuneByte takes over control of the file, so it can do it faster than real-time, but its tricky.

Just adding to the chorus that this is a phenomenal tool. It works - simply and well. It's also great to see the dev take such an active interest on this forum and be responsive to both questions and complaints.

Worth the bucks for sure.

I try to help with what I can. I know video conversion can get complicated, so there always will be questions.

On another note, since this thread is called DVD Catalyst anyways, over the weekend I released DVD Catalyst 3.85.
To update, just click on the cat-eyes in the program, and it will download the update. (installs on top of your installed version)

I updated the manual to reflect the changes, and I added a couple of articles I wrote for the website at the end as well (page count went up from 80 to 140!) The manual in all previous versions was not fully up to date with all the features, so it was time. Every bell and whistle is explained in detail, and made more clear with screenshots.
The manual can also be downloaded separately from the website.

The main new feature I added is a merge function for avi files, but there is plenty more to play with.

edit: due to the bigger file size of the new manual, the update does not include the new one.

I have a home network setup and I can access my hard drive from my PS3. I can see the file after DVD catalyst converts it, and it will play, but the screen is in 4:3 format, the audio isn't synced properly and it's very loud. I have a few more files after DVD catalyst does it's thing and they all come out the same way. I am thinking it may be some of the settings I have selected. I checked all the bubbles where you put PS3 option required like add black bars, allow upscaling, etc.

As I mentioned before, the PS3 is very picky (Sony is always doing things different from everyone else, and expects others to follow them)

I do not own a PS3 myself, so the settings in DVD Catalyst are ones that were reported to me to work properly. The settings have not been updated recently, and from my understanding newer firmware versions of the PS3 have removed some of the limitations on video files that Sony initially put on the PS3 (to boost more bluray sales I guess. They did the same with the PSP when it came out to sell UMD's)

I looked through my emails, and found a few things to try. In a few different posts of mine I mentioned to NOT use Windows Media Player on Windows 7 for testing sync issues. The 2 weeks I spend on troubleshooting sync issues with a person that ended up with Media Player being the problem was in fact in regards of a PS3

In recent versions of the PS3 firmware, they added DIVX and XVID support. Select HD(720) in DVD Catalyst, and then pick the PS3 profile. This is more updated that the Sony > PS3 profiles, which predates the DIVX/XVID addition.
Turn all the special ps3 options back to normal.

Actually no, you are the first, if you are using DVD Catalyst. people have reported similar issues with some other converters

What settings did you select in DVD Catalyst, (which devide profile)
Did you change any settings, increase video quality etc.
When you play the files on your computer do they play with both video and audio then?

those work fine, it has to be something I did then, I'll mess around with it this weekend and see

if they play on my pc they should work right? still doesn't make much sense

it depends on what you use to play.
The best for testing on the PC is Quicktime, since its quite picky about supported files.

Most people here use the HQ2 profile at its default settings (used for most of the trailers as well), try that, and see if it works fine for you.
