It's been several months that my nephew couldn't update his phone to Froyo. We've tried the factory reset and *228 and all the other suggestions and he did not want to root his phone. The solution, which I found in 2 different posts, was to find another phone (we went to a Verizon store and the rep did it for us there) and program the old phone. Then switch it back to your Fascinate. He was able to get Froyo on his Fascinate finally. This seems to do the trick. The Verizon people did not know about this at all and they were quite surprised.
The Verizon guy said it's best to do the switch to another droid phone as to an older phone because it could affect your Unlimited Data plan if you have that grandfathered in. So if you still have the unlimited data plan, make sure you do the switch on another droid.
Good luck to those of you who still need 2.2.
