Email Check Frequency problem

I just ran a test. On my Cox.net account I was having Gmail check those accounts for me, and they were being checked like once an hour or so. So I changed the settings in my Cox accounts to automatically forward mail to my Gmail account.

I sent a test email from my work email account to my cox account. I got the email on my phone with in like 10 - 20 seconds. So Maybe Gmail checking for other accounts isnt the best and it best to forward other accounts to Gmail.
what if you leave the POP3 settings in GMAIL AND forwarded it? GMAIL should be smart enough to know what to do with the mail... and you'll still get to reply through that account.

If you leave the mail on the server then you'll get two notifications I think. The one that gets forwarded and the one Gmail pulls from your account.

I replied to the one I sent from my work email and it showed up in my work inbox as such: [email protected] In Care of [email protected]

I was going to forward my AOL email to Gmail, but I cant find an option to do it. :(

I need my gmail interval to be less than ten minutes or I can set up another pop account if it can't be done. I can't even find the interval settings for the gmail acc on the droid

I check all email accounts with gmail. So all my mail is pushed to my phone instead of having my phone check for email. Go to your gmail account and set it up to check your Pacbell email and then give it a label so when it hits your gmail inbox you know where it came from.

can you do that with a regular yahoo email as well?

i think you have to be a paying yahoo customer to get pop3. everything else is imap.

I love the droid. But I must say, this whole email debachle is hard to believe in this day and age. Especially with Google touting their gmail and this being a google device.

I've tried setting up email 2 different ways:
- GMAIL: First, I tried setting up and using a new gmail account. Through the gmail interface on pc, I set up both of my other (pop3) email aaccounts to come through gmail. Problems - '
1) gmail only checks when it feels like it. Sometimes, in 15 minutes, other times up to an hour or so. THEN, Droid/device won't recieve it from gmail for HOURS, sometimes 1/2 - 3/4 of the day. Can't figure it out. I mean, obviously this is not acceptable, as one of my email accounts is my work mail. totally ridiculous - especially since this email stuff is such an old concept...just ask Bberry (I came from a Bberry).
2) One of my email accounts (work, thankfully) allows me to set up to respond through gmail as if it came from my work email. The other, however, will not allow this set-up and as such my responses say '[email protected] on behalf of [email protected]". Not the end of the world since its my personal email, but give me a break, how hokie and I don't want to confuse people.
3) I really don't like the gmail interace - especially the grouping of conversations. Sometimes I open one and the "new" email is the first thread - with all others closed; and other times, when I open the new email, the "new" email is the last thread. Weird. AND, I delete a new email, and bam, the whole thread is gone. Don't understand why they won't let you shut it off.
4) Gmail does not allow you to delete messages in your other account/mailbox as you mentioned...so I delete all my spam on my device or gmail, then I have to go to my other account and delete it all again.
Needless to say, this doesn't work for me and I'm shocked that I don't hear more of this complaint.

- Corporate MAIL (using pop3 though, not exchange).
So it sets up ok. Nice thing is I recieve directly from the other accounts and can responde directly from them with only those respective email addresses. The interface is fine. interesting that there is a "deselect all" option but not a "select all" one.
Main issue though is, as previously stated, I delete or read emails, and every time it checks for new, it gives me indicators (notificatins, and number next to email boxes indicating new emails) that I have new emails...THE SAME EMAILS IVE ALREADY DELETED OR READ are back in my inbox. So I spend the day going over, deleting, marking "read", etc...the same emails I already have...not so productive.
Good news, and likely where the problem lies though - is that I have it selected to delete messages off server when I delete on device. Again, yes, I could deselect this but it defeats the purpose of productivity and efficiency. I don't to go through the same emails on both the device and PC...
SO frustrating, as there are pros' and cons to both ways, but in this day and age, I would fully expect both to just work. These are remedial but critical tasks.
Very dissappointed to say the least.
Droid is awesome and I realize it's new, but come on - email is very important. I don't use it as just a toy.

My gmail doesn't sync all of the time. Some times it quickly syncs, and others times it goes half a day without syncing. I don't see a option/setting for how often its supposed to check.

My issue is gmail is un predictable zero to 20 minutes,I have switched to the mail client and set for 5 min but it doesn't seem to actually do it. Is there a log somewhere

I have to refresh my non-gmail accounts every freaking day. It's so freaking annoying sometimes. My outlook email account doesnt really "forward" to my gmail either....

Hello everyone...I figured I'd pop in and add my 2 cents!

I was having issues with the Email App...I have about 5 email accounts setup, 2 of which are business. I used to have a Blackberry and, of course, it was perfect for my situation. I setup my emails using the email app and it worked okay for the first day: it reconciled my most recent mail and let me know when I got a new message. But, as soon as I deleted my emails, they would come back as new and unread. I even had it deleting off the server, so that shouldn't have happened. Ugh.

Well as if that wasn't bad enough, then I stopped getting my emails altogether! I hadn't gotten an email in a few days on my Droid, and I refreshed them all to no avail, but I open up my email on my computer and sure enough, I have many messages waiting -___-

Anyway, I followed this thread's advice and now have all my accounts being checked by Gmail. So far, it's worked like a charm. We'll see how often it refreshes. =)

Thank you for all your help everyone!

Gmail is not an option for me, because sometimes it will only check your POP3 / IMAP accounts every hour...that's unacceptable to me. I'm switching back to blackberry until they work this e-mail stuff out.

one thing to check is...if you use the app taskiller, when it closes mail (corporate), it will not refresh automatically until you manually open it back up and ask it to. An easy workaround to this is to put your email app in the "ignore list" in taskiller, and you're all set. Gmail on the other hand, automatically reboots and refreshes itself whether you kill the app or not.
But again, yeh, email sucks on the droid...frustrating cause I really love it otherwise. I get by, but having to go back in and delete same emails I've read or deleted, is just absurd. And with Gmail, well the isses there I posted above - which to me is worse than the issue with corporate mail. If it (Gmail) doesn't refresh for a full day, well, um...little problem there :). can't use gmail...and perhaps worse is its inconsistency. It refreshes fine for a day or few, then one day it just doesn't refresh for hours, then next for the whole day. I need to know my mail is coming in without having to check setting all through the day.
Weak.

Now if you are using email that's important to you. Go in to your settings and forward a copy directly to your Gmail account. GMail is pushed directly to your device so it's almost instant (i checked last it was 18 seconds from send to my device). Then go into your Gmail account settings. You can set that up to reply from the received account. In other words on that. If my d*******[email protected] send an email when it comes in. I want to reply. I simply push replay then type it. When I hit send the recipient sees it came for d*******[email protected]. Not my Gmail account. This way it's seamless :)

Yeah, I hear ya...it's more of a workaround, though. It's sort of a pain to have to delete them off of my work server in addition to my gmail server. I also have to look at how they look when I respond...I don't want recipients to know that I'm having my mail forwarded (technically, it's against our company policy). I'm hoping that the Dec 11 fix addresses the mail program specifically. I don't need instantaneous e-mail alerts...more like every 15 mins.

Not sure how long you've been using this setup, but a couple issues I have are: 1) One of my email addresses fwd through Gmail and reply as from the "other" email account (as you describe above). However, the other will not work this way - instead my reply address is "[email protected] on behalf of [email protected] account". HOKIE! (has something to do with using a TSL server or something...I dunno, gmail says its a starpower issue, starpower says its a gmail issue...of course). Yes, I know there are two options inside your gmail UI to set up. The second option when you manually set up settings is what you're referring to. The first you just put your gmail account login and password and go. Unfortunately with the second option, it will not allow me to set up my starpower account as I describe above. You got lucky that your email works in option two - just as i did with my "other" email address.
2) gmail does not check consistently. YEs, sometimes it will retrieve fast, and others, it will be hours and days. Again not sure how long you've had this working but unfortunately I'm afraid you'll see in time what this issue is.
