Eris newbie...help?

Hi,
I am a relatively new user to the Android family so I have a few questions I need answered if you'd be so kind!
I currently am using my refurbished LG Ally...which I hateeee with a passion. It is nothing but a pain in the rear. I ordered an HTC Eris yesterday and it should be here within a week. Everyone's reviews on the phone were great, and because I am on a relatively low budget, I'm hoping this new phone will last a little while!
Will the Eris automatically update from 1.5? Or will I be stuck with that?
What is the newest software that will update on the Eris? (2.2, 2.3?)

I've done most of my research but those were two questions I still had. If I have anymore I'll be sure to post but any help you could provide would be great! Thanks!

the eris received an ota update in may of last year to eclair (2.1) but i don't think it is still available for download. if you decide to root, there are 2.1, 2.2, and 2.3 roms available for the eris. just do you homework, some of them are very stable and some not at all.
