ext sd card vs internal storage help

Music & video files from the ext. sd card automatically upload & use the same amount of space on the internal storage. How do I stop this automatic upload & keep these files on the ext. sd card only?

I am wondering about this as well.
I now have the nagging VZW update to consider...store it on the SD card, or allow it to update.
But since I never really gave much consideration as to HOW the update was handled, I never bothered trying to figure out where the updates are stored on my phone, until now that is.
I prefer to store the updates on my SD card and perform the update when I decide to. But I have looked into the file structure of my DX, and can't locate that file, even though the notification states it has downloaded TO my phone, I can't locate the target file in root or system, or anything I assume is related to that file.

What vzw update are you referring to?
