You should be able to use your last NE2 and sign up for a 1yr contract.

And upgrades are offered before the contract expires in order to get you back into a contract before it expires.

I tried and was told I couldn't. I would have to wait until May when my contract expired in order to get the 1 year.

I'm pretty sure I read the $50 extra discount on the NE2 is only good with another 2 year commitment. That being said if it's only a $70 difference for a one year over two, I would give up the extra $50 as well. Even though I've been pretty lucky with my OG Droid, I don't want to be locked into another 2 year deal.

i dont suppose i can use my NE2 credit to sign up for a 1 year contract?

Sorry, nope. That's why it's called New Every 2.
Are you sure? You get the credit for keeping it two years, not signing a 2yr contract.

It is not called New to sign up for 2.

It's called New Every 2. You get a new one every 2 years--this isnt possible if you only sign a 1 year contract. Don't believe me-just go to Verizon's site and read it for yourself.

I can't tell what the price is for existing customers, but I was just on Verizon's website and for all the popular Android devices out now (DInc, X, Fascinate) the difference between a one and two year contract is only $30. You'd be crazy not to spend the extra money, especially with a $350 ETF. When did that go up BTW, last I remembered it was only $175?

I've been told by a couple VZW reps that I won't be allowed to get 1-year contract pricing during my early annual upgrade period that I'm sitting on until July when the full upgrade and NE2 kick in. However, they just texted me that my early upgrade is ready when I am. I called the number and discussed the TB with her and she told me no problem on the 1-year when the TB releases.

So (as usual) I am getting conflicting facts from VZW and I'll just have to wait until I upgrade. I am with y'all though that, with the apparent demise of the early upgrade program, the 1-year contract is the way to go and not get locked into a device for too long.

I have had that problem in the store with Verizon reps. We have around a dozen phones in our small business and have had one rep say, "no you can't do that, it's just not possible." We've come back the next day, spoken with a different rep in the same store, asked the identical question and been told, "No problem! I'll just do this, swap that, change the other...and there you go; is there anything else I can help you with today?"

Before I accept anything that a VZW rep tells me is impossible now, I ask multiple reps at different stores. :)

It is not called New to sign up for 2.

New Every Two®

  1. What is New Every Two®?

New Every Two was a marketing program available to customers who signed up for a two-year plan of at least $34.99 per month. Enrolled customers were eligible for a $30 or $50 credit toward a new phone depending on their monthly access tier.
New lines of service will no longer be enrolled in the New Every Two program. If you are currently enrolled, you may redeem your New Every Two benefit one more time for up to six months after fulfilling 20 months of your two-year term.

  2. I think I'm currently enrolled in your New Every Two® program. How do I know what my discount will be if I want to upgrade my phone?
You can check your New Every Two eligibility by signing into My Verizon. If you were enrolled in the program on February 15, 2009 or later, you are eligible for a credit of up to $30 or $50 depending on your plan, with a two-year renewal. If you were enrolled prior to February 15, 2009 and continue to meet the requirements of the program, you will qualify for a credit of up to $50 or $100, depending on your plan. In either case, you will be able to redeem your New Every Two credit one more time for an upgrade for up to six months from the New Every Two Redemption Date. After that time, you will not be re-enrolled.

  3. What happens to my New Every Two® eligibility when I transfer my phone to a new billing party?
The person who is taking over the account will need to meet the program requirements, including subscribing to a price plan $34.99 or higher. The person on the new account will be allowed to keep the same New Every Two® Redemption Date and may redeem it one time within six months af the Redemption Date.

You've never been able to get 1-year pricing for your Annual Upgrade. You can get 2-year pricing and sign a new 2-year contract, which would end your old contract and start a new 2-year from that date. Same thing with your NE2, except you get an additional discount.

If you wait until (I think) 20 months, although it might be 24, you can forfeit your NE2, get a phone at 1-year pricing, and sign a 1-year contract. At least at this point since you'll only be on 1-year contracts, you can get a new phone every 10 months at 1-year pricing.

Thanks for the feedback. I was afraid that what I was hearing about the one-year wasn't going to pan out but was hoping for the best so I wouldn't have to use that evil four-letter word you used: WAIT!

I hate waiting to begin with when there's new toys out there and on top of it all my Droid is on its last legs.

LOL, I hear ya. You could get the Thunderbolt at 2-year pricing, but then you'll be waiting 2 years for your next phone. Who knows, there could be some promos or some new programs by then that will get you a discounted phone.

I intend on getting the T-Bolt on a 1 year contract, as I did with my Incredible. I was able to use my Incredible for a full year and it's just starting to exhibit wear and tear now. All the more reason to stick with a 365-day contract...

Giving the way things have been going though, I wouldn't be surprised if Verizon axed the 1-year contract option. Just cause.

I hate the two year contract.

It's fine for most people, but with newer and better phones coming out as early as every 6 months, having to wait 2 years for a new phone is torture. I usually end up buying a phone at full retail before my contract is up just to keep up with the times.

Ditto. The two-year was fine as long as I could use the early annual upgrade program after 12 months. That was a major reason I opted for VZW in the first place as technology moves too fast to wait two years! What's sad is how the other carriers are advertising that they are providing faster upgrades meanwhile VZW is slowing their upgrades. They must feel that they CAN and not lose customers.
