For all of you who have Advanced Task Killer, you really need to read this...That program can actually make it worse.

Android is different to most other phone operating systems. It's closer to Linux than any other type of operating system. Lots of services and applications constantly run in the background just like they do on Windows. However, and this is important, they do not have to use up a ton of resources. A service or app can be loaded, yet use almost no additional memory, and 0% CPU until it actually has to do something.

In general, killing off stuff is a waste of time. Android automatically asks apps to close that aren't needed when it needs more memory. Killing off some of the processes you are killing off also means it'll slow your phone down, as these processes only need to reload, and when you do need to use them it means the phone will be slower for the few seconds it takes to reload them.

Can we not drag this dumb discussion into this thread as well? There is a huge sticky dedicated just to this.

Here is the bottom line:

If you aren't an idiot, and you exclude the system apps that restart on their own, and only use task killer to kill things that aren't restarted by the system - no problems.

Sorry, so you're saying to uncheck the native apps like settings and alarm clock crap but kill everything you installed from market??

Just making sure cause oops I use this thing a lot on everything 0.0

I exclude all apps that start on their own. So kill all apps, then don't do much with the phone, and then start it back up and see what apps have restarted themselves. The exclude list on my phone is quite extensive.

Yeah a lot of things start on there own and seems like they take stuff up, but guessing they don't do much?

Even if they do, shy of uninstalling them, not much you can do.

ASTRO,2.2.4 (desktop style folder manager etc)

Gmote,2.0.4 ("wow factor" application not used a lot but good turns ur phone into a optical mouse for the laptop over wifi)
Google Sky Map,1.3 (very nice app and huge "wow factor" for plantery search, very few people know star charts or even names of some stars right above our heads, but planets we all know about, it zooms to show a celestial object, I showed it to some moslem scholars who use a lunar calendar, they fell off of their chairs and declared doomsday is near, tech-phobia ?)

Handcent Sms,2.9.30 (recommended download for txt'ers)

Power Search,1.0.5 (search the innards of your droid)
Scan2PDF Mobile 2.0 Lite,2.0.4( very high "wow factor" app, scans pics makes a pdf and emails)
ShapeWriter keyboard,ShapeWriter 2.1.1(this is something which has changed the, index finger or thumb "tap tap" typing domain for ever, in my opinion, slight learning curve but very helpful once you get the hang of it, watch a video or two on youtube before getting frustrated)
ShopSavvy,3.6.1(comparative shopping bar code scanner, allows you to type in the bar code numbers as compared to some others which did not)
Traffic Buddy,0.34 (shows live traffic cam feed for a lot of places)
Total 29 applications.

I am getting the itch to uninstall the stock messaging, stock visual vm, facebook, and a few others without "root", little scary at this moment to "brick" something this cool, risk management...:)
