if you go check out the hacking help section of this site, youll find tons of resources regarding root. like http://www.droidforums.net/forum/hacking-help/20687-complete-how.html for instance. find a how-to guide youre comfortable with and go slow and steady. read a lot before you jump into it. make sure you know the risks and the importance of each step. if you feel uncomfortable with doing it, dont do it.
overclocking is by far the best advantage to rooting, in my eyes. the processor of the droid is governed way down. by overclocking, youre unleashing the true potential of it. again, there are risks- overheating, frying, etc. make sure you read up and keep an eye on the temperature. using profiles offered by the "setcpu" app, ive never once noticed my temperature above 100f.
the worst thing you can do is jump into it with no knowledge. i spent a few weeks gaining confidence and reading other peoples experience with the rooting process. then one day, i sat down and within an hour i was rooted and overclocked and truly AMAZED at how much faster and smoother the droid was capable of running.
