formatting a nexus

what is the correct way to format a nexus,my sd card is not showing up when usb is plugged in.

When you first plug your phone in to your computer (PC/Mac?) you may have to change the USB setting from MTP to PTP. Pull the status bar down and select "Connected as a..." If it says "...Media Device" try changing that to Camera (PTP).

Let me know how it works. I've only had my Nexus for 23 hours so I'm still learning a lot.
