An update to fring came out just a few mins ago. Naturally I was curious if SkypeOut would work now and... VOILA!

I'm pretty sure this was not using phone minutes, I tried to use data during the call and beautiful! (yes i was on 3g). To double check I'm going to check my call log at vzw.com , to make sure it wasn't registered.

The audio is not really that great, but.. free (ostensibly)

Tried on wifi, sounded significantly better, but still not as good as regular call.

Now if only vzw had a plan with 0 minutes!!!

No seriously... when 4g comes out, the first operator to offer a 0 minute plan will have my business.

Enjoy free calling!

disclaimer skypeout isnt free its $3/month

oh interesting, guess i'll be visiting them tomorrow!

I also tested this successfully today. Im looking for it to work while Im in the UK as a way to call home. I tested today from my droid to my wifes droid... takes about 4-5 seconds for the call to go through, but it did work.

Audio was not bad on 3 out of 4 tries... and once I forced both phones to WIFI, it really was pretty good.

Im a little worried about latency when Im trying to do this from England to Colorado, but its better than hotel international calling rates, and Ill have it available to me anywhere Im in WIFI coverage (I hope).

verizon has a data only plan

I may be wrong, but I believe the "data only" plans are limited to specific devices such as laptops and modems. I don't believe you can purchase one for a phone. And since the 5g max data plan from VZW costs $60 a month, you're not going to save money unless you can avoid a voice plan altogether.

Again, I may be wrong about this, but since I have both plans (one for my phone and one for my laptop), I believe that's the case.

I could, of course, forego the data plan for my laptop and use my Droid as a tethered modem but that "would be wrong."

You've been able to use VOIP with Skype and Fring for a while. I tried it a month ago without issue.

Quality sucks though.

Well, the droid trip to the UK didnt work out quite as I planned.

First, free wifi hotspots are impossible to find. Over three days, I never did find one that I could connect to.

I had WIFI at my hotel, and I was able to get Fring to send text msgs. But as soon as I would try to make a call, it would disconnect. I suspect that the provider may have blocked VOIP somehow.

I guess it was a good idea in concept, but in practice it didnt work.

All of the problems I had using Fring to dial out on Skype were because the phone number didnt have a +1 in front of it (for US numbers or +** for whatever other country). I always had the 1, but not the + and you need both. Now I have prolems that my outgoing audio (voice) is really low and slowed down like I am talking through a modulator making it 4x slower speed or something.

I noticed that there is really no free wi-fi anywhere once you get out side the US. 2 years ago it was everywhere, now almost impossible to find in Europe. Same with most other countries. Boo-hoo:mad:

I found several spots (mostly cafes) in Rome last summer on my honeymoon.
