Froyo Issues - need help in wiping phone data

So, I have a new Droid X on the way due to OTA crashing my Droid X. My problem is how to erase the data:

1. using factory reset under settings/privacy does not work and
2. booting into recovery mode and trying to wipe data also fails.

I am getting an error message upon entering recovery mode that says "cannot open /cache/recovery/cpmmand.

Any help is appreciated - I would like to wipe my data before sending the phone back.

That's the only way to do it. Maybe walk it into a Verizon store and explain the issue. See if they have a solution.

Obviously the phone boots up if you can get to your privacy settings. What message does it give you when you tell it to do a factory data reset from there?

It gives no message - just goes to the reset screen with the android and hangs - no status bar at the bottom showing that it is resetting.
