Mike, They key to learning about rooting world for me was. READ! READ! READ! I knew nothing about rooting my droid 1 at all. But I was very interested about it. So I read countless threads from start to end. Asked questions. Read some more. Whenever I got to a point where I thought I had a good grasp on it, I saw another thread that made me realize I still didnt know too much and had some more reading to do. the most helpful threads to read are usually listed in some peoples signatures. My point is keep reading. FurBearingMammal was a huge help to me learning about this stuff. He is very patient and willing to help answer questions. Take what he says seriously and proceed with caution. Take your time and read as much as possible. The rooting world is very cool. enjoy!

As far as apps go, rooted apps are more function than fun: SetCPU, Root Explorer, Titanium Backup, AdFree, and Terminal are some of the apps you will want to take a look at.
