Galaxy Nexus - Wifi Tethering without the need for root

Wow, this really works. I first tried downloading Elixer 2 Widgets, but couldn't create any widgets. Then downloaded just "Elixer 2" as it seems the widget pack is an add-on.

The interface is a little confusing on how to tell it what function you want to perform. When you see the widget editor, press the X to bring up the list of functions.

I also tried this last week, and it worked like you said. You need to download both components of Elixer 2, but it will enable portable Hotspot, without root. I will update the OP.

when we get 4.0.3 for our phones would someone that takes the update tell us if elixer still works cause if it doesn't I'm gonna hold off updating.

Ok, i missed something... We can use elixir to turn on the hotspot. Is this a free tether
Or just a way to quickly activate the paid tethering service?

Seems to just turn on the standard hotspot. Doesn't that cost money each month to use (isn't that the $30/month Verizon hotspot fee)?

It doesn't cost anything. Used it for a month and no additional charges on my bill. Others have been using it since July of last year without paying a dime.

I downloaded and created the Elixer2 Widget WIFI app. I was able to see my phone but it is asking for a password. I read the text in the OP, which said to set up the name and password, but it also said following the steps in the text would NOT be free. Also, how do you turn the WIFI tethering off?

thanks!

I'm just following up on my original post. I was able to get the built in wifi tethering to work with the Elixer widget. But the problem I have now is that it only seems to work for about 5 minutes and then stops transmitting data. The connection on both the phone and tethered device looks OK - no errors. But the data stops flowing. I can turn it off and then on again and it will work for another 5 minutes.

Anyone else have this problem?

If you following the greyed out text, this method is not free. If you are following the method using Elixer 2, then it is free. You must change your Access Point information after starting wifi tethering. You can only do this in the wifi settings screen.

Basically, you are ok if the Verizon check does not appear.

I have had this problem, and have yet to find a fix. Perhaps you can start here: Issue 1257 - android-wifi-tether - Galaxy Nexus errors - Wireless Tether for Root Users - Google Project Hosting

Ok so basically do the top section first with the elixer widget > turn on the widget > then select 'configure tethering hot spot' in the notifications bar > THEN follow the "text" to set up the password and name.

thanks, works great! and I didn't get the verizon check.

Ah, OK. Looks like a known problem. Thanks for the link.
